Tot Louisiana Sugar Cbop.—According to
tho third annual statement of Mr. Bouohereau,
just published, the Louisiana crop of sugarpro-
duoed last year was 144,881 hogsheads; weigh
ing 188,378,592 pounds. This was a very large
increase; but nevertheless the crop was below
average to the acre, owing to unfavorable
weather. The yield of molasses was over ten
million gallons, an increase of nearly 100 per
cent, on ths previous year. The successive su
gar crops, Binoe the war, have been as follows
1870, 144,381 hogsheads; 1869, 87,090; 1868,
84,256; 1867, 37,647; 1866,41,000; 1865,15,000.
The largest sugar crop ever produced was in
1861, when the orop footed up 469,510 hogs
heads—unusually large, since tho previous crop
was only 228,758 hogsheads. The Picayune*
says the sugar crop is now re-established on
solid basis, and for the current year will proba
bly be 200,000 or 225,000 hogsheads. Many
hundreds of negro laborers have been brought
out from Tennessee, Virginia and the Caroli
nes, and no inconsiderable amount of white
labor has been drawn into the cultivation of
the cane.
The Mobile Exp Bess Bobbeby.—-The Mo
bile Register, of Saturday, announces the de
tection of the gang who threw the express safe
out of tho Mobile and Ohio Railroad train on
the Saturday before—the arrest of the ring
leader and the recovery of four thousand dol
lars of the money. It was the work of a gang
of negro desperadoes living ronnd the outskirts
of Meridian, rmd beaded fey w.nk cu.«.V;
got up the Meridian riot, and against whom ten
indictments are now pending. Crosby and his
gang are bold and defiant outlaws, and defend
themselves by arms against arrest. However,
the police got him this time, and with him his
part of tho spoils, winch was just $4,000, or
one-third of the whole sum in the safe. This was
only one of a long series of robberies perpe
trated on the road by Crosby and his gang. Cros
by has come out with a full confession, and when
all his crowd are caught, the Kn-klux Committee
can learn fully as much as they will want to
know aboutthe “Meridian Massacre,” and weep
as much as they please about his cruel fate.
New Publications.—Lee & Shepard, Boston,
have just published the second series of Oliver
Optic’s Yonng America Abroad. It is a very
entertaining narrative of travel and adventure
in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, handsomely
illustrated, printed and bonnd—3C8 pages.
William T. Adams, who writes under the sou
briquet of “Oliver Optio,” Is a charming author
for the young.
The Youxo DixivEnEBS or Pleasant Cove, is
the second of a series by Rev. Elijah Kellogg,
just issued by the same publishing house—sto
ries of adventure by sea and land. A very
pretty book of 300 pages. Both can be found
at the book store of Brown & Co.
The Sobxhebn Magazine, for July, is full of
promising contributions by Southern writers.
Professor W. Leroy Brown, of the University
of Georgia, contributes a paper on Shooting
Stars and .Erolites. The Dukesborough Tales

the other original papers. Murdock, Browne

Great Atlantic Coast Line.—This route for
speed, convenience and comfort, bids fair to be
the favorite of those who design visiting the
Viiginia Springs or New York tho present sea
son. Fifty hoars suffice to transport the pas
senger from Macon to New York via ^gusta,
Wilmington and Richmond, with bnt t#o chang
es of cars to the latter point. A number of new
and elegant passenger cars have iost been added
to tho line, with an tne modem improvements
for ventiliation, eto., and the eating houses at
Branchvillo, Fair Bluff, and Magnolia, are on-
surpassed in the country. The connections are
close and regular, and the conductors and offi
cers all courteous and polite.
Fare from Macon to New York only $31 00.
Through to Washington in 42 hours. Travelers,
take heed.
University or Georgia Appointments.—From
an Athens letter dated the 26th -and which we
will publish entire to-morrow—we Ieam that
the following appointments have been made by
the Faoulty fox the approaching commence
ment: First Honor: Messrs. E. H. Briggs, of
Columbus; G. A. Howell, of Valdosta; and A.
A. Murphey, of Monroe county. Second Honor:
G. R. Glonn, of Dawson, and I*. K. Yonge, of
Pensacola. Third Honor: E. Newton, Union
Point, Greene county. Speaker’s places were
given to Messrs. J. L. Hand, of Americas, and
B. W. Neal, of Thompson. The following re-
ceived Honorable Mention: H. O. Ansley, of
Augusta; B. A. Denmark, of Quitman; R. A.
Goetobius, of Columbus, and J. L. Hardeman,
of Maeoa.
A Cbop of Onions.—Mr. Thomas Hunt, Sr.,
of Marshalville, brought to tho office yesterday,
a basket of onions—the largest we have ever
seen. They weigh an average of about thirteen
ounoes. On 1,170 square feet of land of his
plantation in Jones county, Mr. Hunt gathered
eighty bushels of these onions and twelve bush
els of buttons. Heretofore he has had no diffi
culty in selling the onions at $2 per bnshels and
the buttons at $10. Bat the onion market is
now glntted. A dollar per bushel is the’ best
offer. Times are so tight that people can weep
without the aid of onions. Otherwise $280
would have been a righteous prodact for 1,170
feet of land.
A Qceeb Story.—The Evening Post has a
special dispatch from Ohio, stating that Gen.
Ewing was really nominated Demucralio candi
date for Governor of Ohio, instead of McCook,
who was declared ttie nominee—declared so on
an erroneous count ortho ballot. He adds that
McCook holds on under the plea that the subse
quent usual action of the Convention making
his nomination unanimous coverea all errors.
H that story is trae we should say that McCook
holds a bad position.
A new disease has recently attacked hogs In
Fulton county, Illinois. It is different in its
symptoms from hog cholera, and seems more
like a oongestive chill as manifested in human
beings. When the hogs are attacked they
bunch up together for warmth. The chill is
followed by fever, when they soon die. The
per centage of deaths Is large.
A New Subscriber But an Old One. We
had an order yesterday to send the paper to Mr.
Wiley Philips, Monticelio, Jasper county. Mr.
Philips writes that he is in his eightieth year,
and therefore six months at a lime is long
enough to order the paper in advance. Long
may he live to repeat the order.
Accounts from various localities in the
Northwest represent that the locusts are dying
in great numbers. In many places' the ground
is thickly covered with dead ones, and few live
ones are seen. They have, however, done much
damage to the young forest trees.
