A Storm.
Again tho predictions of the weather bureau
are verified, and we have bad what is probably
a side issue of the great cyclone travelling from
East Florida northwest. A fierco sontheaBtly
gale sprung up Friday night at ten o’clock, and
by the wee small hoars of Satr-day morning
blew almost a hurricane, accompanied with tor
rents of rain. It has ever since been blowing
a gala—tho wind gradually veering round to tho
southwest. We are aware cf no serious dam
age to property in town, but snob a blow makes
sleep impossible, end occasion a good deal of
anxiety. Saturday was a dark and threatening
day throughout.
Snead, the Bigamist—On yesterday after
noon the train from Atlanta brought to this city
Mrs. Annie H. Snead, wife No. 1, of Col. J. T.
Snead, of Armory Factory notoriety, who was
arrested some time ago in thi3 city on a charge
of bigamy, in that he had married aMiss Myrict,
of Baldwin county, when he had a wife living
in the city of New York. Mrs. Snead passed
through the city last night on her way to Mil-
ledgevillo to appear as a witness against her re
creant husband, who will be tried this week be.
fore tho Superior Coart of Baldwin county.
We learned from her that she was married to
Snead at Liberty, Bedford county, Va., on tho
31st of May, 1861, in the hotel of that towD,
kept at the time by Col. W. C. Hewitt, now pro
prietor of the Globe Holel, of Augusta. CoL
Hewitt, she says, witnessed the ceremony. The
couple lived happily together for seven or eight
years, when, being roduced to indigent cireum-
stances, Mrs. Snead sought to earn a livelihood
with her needle, and Snead began to wander off
and engage in various schemes to bolter his
condition—among others that of the Armory
Factory in this city. When out of New York, he
kept up a regular correspondence with his
wife, and no unpleasant feelings existed be
tween them, nor did he cease to correspond with
her until some time last spring, when he wrote
to her requesting her not to write to him again.
She replied to this last letter, but it was re
turned to her unopened, and soon afterwards
she beard that he was marriod again. Mrs. S.
still cherishes the affection of a wife for him,
and it is with feelings of anguish and mortifica
tion that sho has been compelled to appear
against him, thqagh a sense of womanly prido

Active Times.—The Commercial and Finan
cial Chronicle prognosticates active trade and
lively times this fall and winter—good for regu
lar business, but bad for the speculators.—
Speaking of the financial yoar which closes on
the 31st of August, the Chronicle says:
The customary bases of estimating the value
of merchandise being disturbed, extreme fluctu
ations in prices followed. Cotton declined and
advanced seven cents per pound. Flour advanced
and declined nearly two dollars a barrel. Wheat
advanced fifty cents and declined thirty-five
cents a bushel. Pork advanced four dollars and
declined nine dollars a barrel, with ether hog
products in proportion.
The Wilmington Star is responsible for tho
following—at least, we have seen it in no other
paper:•
Bathixq Undeb Ditiioulties.—Out in Ohio,
some time since, twenty Baptist clergymen,
who were attending a convention, went down
to a secluded spot on the river bank in the af
ternoon for the purpose of taking a swim.
These score of brethren removed their clothing
and placed it-upon the railroad track close at
hand, because the grass was wet. Then they
entered tho water and enjoyed themselves.
Presently an express train came around the
curve at the rate of forty miles an hour, and
before any of the swimmers conld reach dry
land all their undershirts and socks and things
'were fluttering from the cow-catcher and speed
ing onward toward Kansas. It was painful for
the brethren—-exceedingly painful—because all
the clothing that could be found, after a careful
search, was a sun umbrella and a pair of eye
glasses. And they do say that when those twenty
marched home by the refulgent light of the
moon that evening, in single file and keeping
close together, the most familiar acquaintance
with tho Zouave drill, on the part of the man
at the head with tho umbrella, still hardly suf
ficed to cover them completely. They said they
felt conspicuous, somehow; and the situation
was all the more embarrassing because all the
Dorcas societies and woman’s rights conven
tions, and the pupils at the female boarding
schools, seemed to be prancing around the
streets and running across the route of the pa
rade.
Tennessee on a Fbolio.—We see by letters
home that the Tennessee editors are on a “press
excursion” to Baltimore, where they have beon re
ceived withal! the honors and railroaded, steam-
boated and hacked all over, around and abont
tho city and itsland and water environs. Besides,
thoy have feasted their reasons and flowed their
souls to a certain degree. They think Baltimore
is a great place, and Baltimore has this advan
tage that it oan be seen to be a great plaee
drunk or sober.

themselves to be indistingnishably and inimita
