Washington, D. G., December 20, 7:40, P. M. j
The lowest barometer continues in New Eng
land, having fallen decidedly since Tuesday p.
u. Snow has very generally ceased except in
western New York. The high barometer which
was west of the Mississippi has extended to the
Blue Ridge and Lake Erie, with rising pressure
and cold northwest winds from New York to
Sonth Carolina and westward—the area of
greatest cold having passed southeastward to
Lake Michigan. Clear weather prevails very
generally east of the Mississippi, except on the
lower lakes. The barometer has fallen with
rising temperature and rain at the Rocky Moun
tain stations. Telegraphio communication with
the Pacific coast is still interrupted.
Probabilities: Falling barometer and cloudy
weather, with rising temperature, will probably
prevail on Ihnrsday west of Michigan and Ala
bama, with rain or snow in Dakotah and Wyom
ing Territories. Fresh northwest winds, with
falling le-unerature and clear weather, will con
tinue from* Florida to Virginia. The area of
greatest c-ild will extend west of Pennsylvania
and New England, with northwest winds in the
Middle and Eastern States.

for the Snpreme Court as by jurisdiction of
Federal Courts over Democratic crimes.
In the House of Representatives to-day the
debate on the impeachment of Scott was re
sumed. Mr. Bowen spoke two honrs. He said
that great pressure had been put upon him to
induce him to withdraw his charges. He stated
that the State stock in the Greenville and Colum
bia road was sold at $2 75 to White. Other par
ties would have given $5, and that Scott refused
to sign a transfer until his brother-in law wsa
given $40,000. He exposed the transaction of
the Land Commissioner, showing that lands
were bought at five and six times. The agri
cultural land scrip was reported sold at 724
cents, bnt he knew men who paid 84 cents for
it. Bowen was followed by several members
who denounced his motives. Jones charged
Bowen with perjury and read a disprtch sant
last summer by Bowen, begging Scott to revoke
the authority given Judge Barnett to proceed
against the financial agent, Kimpton. It is said
that Scott has secured enough vofos to ensure
Bowen’s expulsion, and determined efforts-will
be made in that direction.

Anotheb Advance in Steel Maxing.—The
Harrisburg Patriot says:
A series of experiments have been made at
the steel works below the city in the manufac
ture of steel exclusively from the Pennsylvania
ores. The result is said to be so satisfactory
as to justify the expectation that thiB country
may eventually export ores or pig metal to the
European manufactories. The chemist em
ployed at Baldwin makes an artificial ferry-
manganese wh ch is claimed to be even better
than the imported speigeleison, and the prodnot
of the Bessemer converters is said to be of such
remarkable tenacity that it may soon be ex
pected to supersede wrought iron entirely. The
Pennsylvania Bailroad Company is rapidly re
laying its main track with steel rails, the great
er portion of which are made at Baldwin. The
rails have been subjected, together with the
best foreign steel rails, to very severe compara
tive tests, and those manufactured at thePenn-
Bylvania steel works have proved to be ihe best
in regard to safety, tenacity, durability and
economy."
