jnE FBEEDMEVS BANK.
Moef Ins of Colored Depositors,
On Monday evening, in tlie Council
Chamber, a meeting of colored citizens
was lield in order to endorse tlie bill re
cently introduced in Congress by Hon. M.
p. O'Connor, of South Carolina, providing
for tbe reimbursement by appropriation
of those who lost money by tlie failure
of the Freedmen’s Bank a number of
years ago. There were a large number
of depositors in Macon, and their aggre
gated loss will reach about $52,000, not
including interest on their various deposits,
When the bank went under there was
mourning and weeping among the inter
ested, and each little dividend which was
paid out of the gathered remnants of the
corpus of the capital was received with
exceeding joy by the credulous but patri
otic freedmen. The subject has been ever
since one of peculiar interest to those who
held the pass books of the bank.
The Council chamber was accordingly-
crowded on Monday evening. Edward
Woodliff was called to the chair and pre
sided over the meeting. Several speeches
were made pertinent to tlie issue, and a
set of resolutions introduced by Jeff Long,
thanking Representative O’Connor, of
South Carolina, for the part he had taken
in tlie matter, and requesting the members
of the Georgia delegation to co-operate
with him in urging the passage of the bill.
If passed, it certainly would be of great
benefit to the colored people of this section
About tlie expediency of such legislation
we have nothing to say. One depositor
in Macon, has $1,000 in the defunct insti
tution. Copies of the resolutions will be
sent to Mr. O’Connor aud members of
the Georgia delegation. The meeting
was harmonious throughout.
Runaways.
Yesterday was prolific of runaways,
and a quartette of them occurred witliin a
short time of each other on and near Mul
berry street. About one o’clock a young
man from Jones county, by the name of
Brown, who came into the city to get a
load of fruit trees from the yard of the
Stubblefield House, drove his team to the
side gate, when the mules became fright
ened at tlie cone wood-work over the
sewer mouth at this place and dashed off,
displacing the body of the wagon. The
young man was thrown to the lleor of the
wagon, and, losing control of the flying
mules, clambered over the side of the body
and hit the dust, the body following a mo
ment after. The mules ran with the
wagon to Walnut street, and were
stopped by running into a telephone wire
post, without injuring themselves or wag
on much. A few minutes later they ran
again, but were speedily taken in hand.
Another runaway occurred on New
street. Mr. Henry Kitchens was driving
his team toward Mulberry street, when a
large piece of loose paper caused them to
become frightened. Mr. Kitchens was
thrown violently to tlie ground, bruising
his hands quite painfully. The mules
broke away from the back wheels, and
ran into Mulberry street w ith the front
pair of wheels, and after coming very
near running over Mr. G. C. Price, ran
into a tree near Massenburg’s drug store,
aud were brought to sudden halt. The
wagon and a tree box were considerably
smashed up. En route a mule attached to
a buggy made a dash, but succeeded in
accomplishing no damage.
A Rare Relic.
Yesterday there was picked up on th
place of Colonel J. W. Aderhold, below
the city, a rare piece of Indian pottery in
a fine state of preservation. It is a bowl
shaped vessel, composed of dark earthen
material, about twelve inches in’diameter,
tlie sides contracted at the top some two
inches smaller than the largest portion.
The bottom is about four inches in di
ameter. On one side is a small pipe or
spout with an orifice through it about a
half-inch in diameter. The entire outside
is figured in the manner peculiar to In
dian pottery. On one side a crack extends
down nearly to the base of the vessel.
It was found near a mound on the bank
of the Ocmulgee, and was exhumed by
the recent flood. It is a very interesting
relic, and can be seen at this office.
County Court.
Yesterday Judge Holt had before him
a colored citizen who bore, according to
the warrant taken out against him, the
name of Hickory Bird Brannan, charged
with the offense of disturbing public wor
ship. Tlie evidence adduced showed that
the accused was in Hie gallery of the Sec
ond Baptist Colored Church, and being
desirous of going out could not pass on
account of tlie crowd.
He accordingly endeavored to force a
passage by using expressions which were
not appropriate to the place or occasion,
and was tried and found guilty and sen
tenced to six montlis on the chain gang,
He claims that his name is Ichabod.
Several other cases were continued, and
several civil cases disposed of.
Sale of tlie Brown House.
Yesterday the sale of the Brown House
was perfected and the titles regularly
passed and recorded. The house was
sold free from all encumbrances in the
way of mortgages, liens, executions, etc.,
aud a fee simple title for tlie property was
given to Mr. P. C. Lounsbery, of New
York, the purchaser. The terms of the
sale were $50,000 in cash and $8,761 for
the furniture. Tlie outstanding debts of
the house amounted to about $26,000. In
tlie sale the vacant lot adjoining the hotel
was reserved by Judge Brown. The house
was turned over to Mr. George C. Brown,
by the purchaser; wlio will continue it as
usual.

Now that Macon has a free postal deliv

out to keep the boxes in place. Captain
Jim Dense informed us last night that a
countryman came into that city and want

convenient, be tore off tlie top of one of
tbe street post-office boxes and fed his
horse in it.
