In the English House of Lords the Earl of
u,l,v created a sensation by denouncing the
-rchase system in tho army. Though the
‘, w linown to be a liberal Tory, his peers
... g^tonished to seo him rise against the
honored practice of selling all higher
of rage that the police interfered to protect the
Englishmen from being mobbed and requested
them to leave the city for their own safety.
The Pope, while receiving a Polish deputa
tion, expressed his satisfaction at seeing them
in Borne; he had confidence, he said, in tho
better f ntnre of tho Church as well as of Poland,
and he called upon the Polish nation to trust, to
persevere, and to pray, because he knew by ex
perience that these virtues would conquer all
obstacles. The Holy Father presented each
member of the deputation with a medal.
In Naples the police discovered a conspiracy
to organizo a rising in favor of Francis II, tho
ex-King of both Sicilies.
The Papal jubilee was the canse of a regular
fight In the Spanish Cortes. The discussion of
a proposition to foward the infallible Pope the
congratulations of the Cortes led to such angry
debates that the monarchial deputies came to
actual blows. In a secret session, held after
wards, mutual apologies were made and the ac
cident had no fatal conseqnencee. The discus
sion on Cnban affairs also gave rise to a stormy
debate. A motion to censure tho Government
was tho signal for savage speeches and a terrible
excitement. Tho Ministers, fearing to face
a vote, requested the withdrawal of the motion,
and stated that laws made since the home revo
lution could not be extended to the colony, nor
could slavery be abolished until the insurrection
was suppressed. The Cortes finally agreed that
all efforts should be made to crush tho rebellion
at once. Jabko.

Macon, Ga., March 23,1871.
‘We have had one of the U. S. Gaslight Compt
ny’s Machines, in operation since the 10th of No-
vember, 1870, and it is perfectly satisfactory to ns
in its general working and cheapness. Wepaidtho
Macon Gaslight Company for four months of last
year and the year previous—viz: November, De
cember, January and February—$399.56. In using
this Machine our gas for the four corresponding
months cost us $114—thus saving ns in that time
S285.56. The light is quite as good as that of the
City Gas Company, and has tho advantage of being
entirely under our control to use as we please.
During tho severe weather in December it burned
without intermission, not being at aU affected by
the freeze. We Bee no trouble in the Machine or
the light, and cheerfully recommend it.”
