While absent tbe house took fire and waa oonsnmed, tbe child and all their personal effects being destroyed together. The Dead Calf Aoaci —Whose dnty is it to see that filth, and aromatic nuisances are remov ed from the streets ? We mentioned yesterday morning a dead calf laying just under the blnff in front of Wesleyan Female College and we noticed that yesterday afternoon it had not been removed. This is now the fifth day since we saw it lying there and know not how long it bad been there before. Street committee! street scavenges! anybody! please look after it ■ — '.- Accidentally Bussed.—Yesterday morning as little Elodia Boardman, daughter of Mr. J. M. Boardman was going to school, sho stopped by a Are which some workmen had bnilt within short distance of tbe school room, (Mrs. Bailie’s, corner of Third and Walnut street,) and in a few minutes her clothing took fire Sbe becoming frightened, ran towards the school room, but Messrs. J. V. Grier and E. P. Strong being near by saw her and ran after her as rapidly as possible, catching her jnst as she entered the room, and throwing her upon the floor wrapped her np instantly with their over coats, smothering the flames. Mrs. Bailie and G. C. Conner came to their assistance and stripped the clothes from the child in a mo ment. Mrs. Bailie had her hand* pretty badly bnrned while removing tbe child’s clothing, bat luckily the child escaped without being seriona- !y hurt It was a narrow escape, and but for the timely arrival of Messrs. Grier and Strong she would certainly have been badly if not fatally burned. Sad Accident at Bullied Stitios—Captain Norman McDuffie Killed.—Yesterday mom- tag as the up passenger train on the Macon and Brunswick road was passing Bollard Station, Capt. Norman McDnffie stepped from the car while the train was yet in motion, and when walking up the platform steps to enter the de pot, slipped and fell between th6 moving train and the platform and was instantly crushed to death. These are the particulars as nearly as we con'd get them, and suppoee they are in the main, correct. Captain McDuffie was about fifty years of age and has been for many yean an influential citizen of Pulaski county, until two years ago when he removed to Texas. A short time since he returned to visit his old friend* and acquaintances, and had jnst started back to his home and family. Alas! alas ! he will never reach them. Several person from near Hawktasville were in company with him on route tot Texas where they propose settling. Captain McDuffie will be remembered as the gentleman who had, during the war. a consider able controversy with General Howell Cobb in regard to x steamer seized by the General on the Ocmnlgee river while in command of this district. He was well known throngbont this section, and his sndden death has brought sad ness to miny hearts. SrrzxiOE Coubt—Ieial or L C. Elds.—At nine o’clock, a. m. the court was called to order by hia Honor, Judge Cole, and from the tails jurors tommoned, the counsel for the State and the accused proceeded to select four jurymen, the number still lacking yesterday afternoon. At half past ten they had been selected as follows : Jacob Ried, Melanctbon H. Cotter, Levi G. Bright and Robert Barnhart. They were sworn and took their seats in the box. The indictment was read by Mr. Hall, and at eleven o'clock pre cisely the witnesses for the State, Mtearg. £. Isaacs, John Vi. O'Conner and Dr. Mettaner were sworn. Mr. Isaacs wee first called to the stand and the counsel for the defence requested that Mr. O'Conner be removed from the room, which was done, after which the examination wanton. It waa Imposible to be in the court room *11 day, and we could not eopy all the evidence We therefore, for the present forbear givtag any of iL By one p. E. the witnesses for the State bad been examined and the court took recess until two. In tbe afterncon one witness for tbe defence was examined and a second caL'ed to tbe stand, during whose examination, et five o'clock, a question was raised as to the right of tbe defence to proponnd a certain ques- to the_witness. His Honortbcn adjourned the court until nine this mornirg, when the ques tion will be signed. The coart room is filled with anxions spectator?, and the witnesses thus far have testifiid with the greatest composure and calmness, speaking distinctly so as to be heard plainly thronghout the room. The Katie Putnam comedy company pre sented ‘‘Hostdale,” one of the most elegant of modern comedies to a fine house lad evening It was a moet enjoyable performance. Each member seemed exactly fitted for the rot* as signed him or her. Katie as Boea Leigh was perfection. In her scenes with Elliot Gray it was more like reality, than acting. She ia without donbt tbe most natural and life-like pertonator of character we have ever seen. The rendering of the beauti ful cavitina “L’ardita” In, tho fourth act was moet entbusiasticly encored when she favored as with the exquisite ballad ‘‘Come Birdie Come,” in a faultless manner, and we are cer tain that the day is not far distant when Katie Putnam will stand at the head or her profes sion and we shall heartily say “all hail, Katie.” The part of Miles McKenna was assigned to J. B. Ashton, who thoroughly identified himself with the character, and made himself so obnox ious and villataona that we were glad when he was sent to prison. Mary McWilliams, as Tabitha Stork, ren dered the part in a fanltleas manner, and showed herself a thorough artiste. Mr. Browne, as Elliot Gray, seemed perfectly at ease, and never have we seen anything more life-like than the scenes between himself and Rosalie. They made the o!d times come o’er us once more, and we fancied oarse!fa boy again.
