of tha students were present, owing to illness.
Tbe exercises commenced at an early hour. A
stand bad been ereoted for tho speakers under
tho wide spreading oaks in his spaclona yard—
where were assembled a large crowd of pcoplo
—ail invited gnosis. I was surprised to meet
with Bnoh n mnltitndo of peoplo in this spsrce-

learned that several of the adjaoent counties
bad representatives among tho crowd. The
boys opened the cxerolses by rpcaking “Tho
Sohool lloom" in ooncert; after which all tho
sohool joined In Ringing, which was very melo
dious. The reading t.y all tho boya was good;
ihelr speeches woro ppirit-stirringand patriotic.
Etch one tried to surpass tho other in his accu

cially, noticed two yonng Misaes, who were so
brilliant and beautiful. Mira l-'annie B. Pettis
and Miss Pauline Kitchens. They read
their oaruys verv clearly and distinctly, and
“Her Native Land” was read well. Tho

lead several nioo pieces of poetry, and soma of

General Hubert K. Lee.
A writer in the liichmond Enquirer, Gen.
Dabney H. Maury, corrects several errors that
have appeared recently in the reviews of En
glish Magazines of “Cooke’s Life of Lee,” and
a review in the Standard of an article in the
Edinourgh. We extract the following, which
we regard as authentic, in regard to tho forces
employed by Lee and Grant in the great battles
from (Spotsylvania to Kichmond:
“I: is well established by the Federal records
that the losses of Grout, between the first .- ..
nion with Lee's army and the defeat which he
sustained at Gold Harbor, amounted to 123,000
men. Sainton nnd other careful historm-s sj
• tote it The Edinburgh reviewer places the
total losers of the army of the l’otomac at a
much lower figure. While he states the num
bers of the army of Northern Virginia at 70,-
000 effectives, we know that General Lee did
not have .'-'.fit**- men on any one battie-fieid
daring the campaign.
“Again, the army of Grant at the Appomat
tox la stated in tbe Kt-view at l.’.O ivm--that of
l*e at 40,000. Whereas. General Leo himself
assured the writer of this that on the 2d of April,
1893. his whole force of arms amounted to oniy
32,000, men, while Grant stated to General Lee
that on the name date his effective force of arms
Bombered no less than 220,000 men.
“General Lee fnrther stated to ms that when
he surrendered at Appomattox on the t'th of
April, after seven dsya of hard marching, fight
ing and starvation, he had only about fi. -
effectives left to beer the btUle flags for the
last timo of the grandest army which ever yet
has upheld a righteous cause, and illustrated
•he manhood of a noble race.”

Tbero is nothing, aays Max Adeler, a yonng

dinner at tbe boose of a friend and bo asked to
carve the tnrkey. He never carved a tnrbey in
bis life, nnd with an old maid on one side of
him, watching him closely, and on the other
side a fair girl for whom ho h.s a tenderness,
bo feels embarrassed when bo begins. First be
pnihes tbe knife down toward one of the thigh
joints. He oan't find the joint, and he plunges
■ he knife aronnd in search of tt until he makes
mince moat ont of ono whole quarter of a fowl.
Their he sharpens tis knife and tncklrs it again.
At last, while maklDS a terrfic dig, he hits tho

lady's lap, while her dress-front is covered
with A shower of stuffing. Then he goes for
tho oilier log, and when tho yonng lady tells

suddenly to become -100 degrees warmer. This

hacking at the wing he gradually pushes the Irg

tho tnrkey so bard with tbe fork that it slides
off the dish and npeeta a goblet of water on the

away at the wings, gets them off in a mntilated
condition, and be digs into the breasL Before
he can cut any off, tho host asks him why he
don't help ont the tnrkey.
Bewildered, ho pnts both legs on a plato and
hand* them to the maiden lady, atd then he
helps the yonng girl to n platefnl of stuffing,
and while taking her plate in rctnra knock*
over the gravy boat Then he sits down with
the calmness of dsspalr, and fans himself with

Fiu. sowings of all kinds, except wheat,
should begin from the middle of Angnst to the
middle of September. Fall oats were badly
winter-killed this year—spring oats haTe been
unusually fine. It wilt be unwise to conclude
from this that fall oats won't do. Oar own ex
perience, and tbe best information we can get
from all quarters is, that fall oats are the most
certain crop of tbe two, and especially is tbi*
true if they are planted on rich land, or if well
fertilized. A plant well fed can resist cold jnst
as an animal well fed ean do.
Another safeguard against oold is to sow in
drills and cover the reed in sneh manner as to
fill tbe drills in part only, so that the yonng
plants may come np in trenches below tbe gen
eral surface, and have dirt gradually thrown
npon them by the freezes. This may be ao-
oomplished by running farrows with a scooter,
as close together as can bo done witbont filling
each other, pnttingoats and fertilizers in these,
asdoovertDg by'rnnning a light harrow or brnsh
acres* the farrows. Colton seed, Peruvian
gnano, or sulphate of ammonia with superphos
phate, are the best fertilizers for small grain,
whero stable msnnro cannot be had.—SoutJiern

An Important Letter.
From a prominent gentleman and resident of Cin

tho book publishers throughout tbe United Mates:
New Iork, October 11, lb70.
Dr . Radwat : Dear bir—I am induced by a senae
of duty to tne suffering to make a brief atatemsnt
of the working of yonr medicine on myself. For
several years 1 had been affected with some trouble
in the bladder and urinary organa, which some
twelve months ago culminated in a most terribly
afflicting disease, which the physicians all said was
a spasmodic stricture in the oretha, aa also inflam
mation of the kidneys and bladder, and gave u as
their opinion that my age—78 years—would pre
vent my ever getting radically cured. I had tried
a number of physicians, and bed taken a large
quanity of medicine, both alopathic and homeoe-
pathic, but had got no relief. I had read of »stoh-
lelnng cures having been made by your remedies;
and some four months ago read a notice in the
Fhiladelphia Saturday Evening Post of a cure hav
ing been effected on a person uho had long been
suffering a* I had been. I went right off and got
some of each—your Sarsaparilhan Resolvent,
Ready Belief, and Regulating Fill*—and com
menced taking tbem. In three days 1 was greatly
relieved, and now feel as well as ever.
