Now, to say that we were m surprised by the profi- c j en cy and manly bearing of the young (rentlemen participating in the exercises on t > )a t occasion, would but faintly ex* v;r <> our feelings. The exhibition was L id in the new hall lately erected, whi'-h, although spacious, was much too -mall to accommodate the mass of anx ious spectators. On entering, the neat simplicity of the hall attracted our atten tion. Soon, however, the folding doors were thrown open, displaying a tasty stage, permanently erected in the hall. The music, consisting' in that of piano, violin, and brass instruments, was pleas ing and artistic. To the beauty of the nieces selected for the occasion, the young musicians added beauty of execution. The Salutatory, composed and spoken by Master George Barnes, would have done credit to an older writer and more experienced orator. The young gentle man who sustained the several .charac ters in the drama, the “Hidden Gem,” by Cardinel Wiseman, acquitted them selves in a manner most pleasing to the . v rge and intelligent audience present, and creditable to themselves. I was mic'i delighted with the youthful, althy and refined appearance of the students of the College, and especially if those engaged in the exhibition, who performed their several difficult parts with that graceful ease which clearly pointed the untiring care bestowed on the students of this College by the jeal ous and accomplished President, the Rev. A. J. M. Brown, A. M., and the Franciscan Brothers. Although the performances of one and all were highly satisfactory to the audience, still the fol lowing gentlemen attracted my especial attention on account of the masterly manner in which they acquitted them -elves, viz- Messrs. J. I\. Boyd, Win. C. Stillwagen and G. J. Akers. In the drama, these young gentlemen attained the highest point of excellence. They won not ouly applause, but the very highest honor and reputation. They gave fair promise of future usefulness and greatness. The original orations, composed and delivered by Messrs. Boyd and Stillwagen were master-pieces in composition, and beautifully oratorical in delivery. At last, but not the least in point of real worth, came the Valedictory, written and spoken by Mr. G. J. Akers, a grad uate of the College* This young gentle men showed oratorical and Rhetorical powers, which a youthful Demosthenes well might envy. Many a flattering re mark was made by the large audience m regard to the careful and excellent training given the students of St. Fran cis College by the energetic and accom plished President and the good Brothers of the Order of St. Francis. We had the honor of being present at the “Pre sentation” which took place in the Col lege Hall the evening previous to the Exhibition. It consisted in a “surprise” in the shape of a most beautiful and cost ly Bible, superbly bound, which the Undents of the College presented to their kind and beloved President. The neat little presentation speech was made by Master 0. Me Meal. To which the liev. President made a brief but eloquent and affi-ctionate reply. Many of the spectators offered their kindest congratulations to the President on account ot the beautiful manifestation oitke love and esteem of the students for him. Everything passed of pleasantly and ’° : he great satisfaction of all present. Spectator.
