CHARLESTON, Nov. 17.— Cotton-^- The market
throughout nearly the whole of the preceding week
was in a languid and drooping condition, and
when we dosed our inquiries on the 9thinst, most
qualities had sufferei a reduction of 4 a |o ; the
heaviest docline, however, was on the lower grades,
inconsequence, as we before s'ated, of their com
parative abundance. Good Middling at the time i
was valued at 9i a94c , and Middling Fair 94 a 9sc. 1
Tn the early part of the week under review, the ’
article was rather neglected. Although buyers *
had so recently gained an advantage over sellers,
they were demanding still lower terms, to which
holders were not disposed to submit, and hence the j
comparative limited transactions that marked the {
business of the first three days; but Shme of them <
subsequently became more tractable, and accept- ‘
ed prices they had previously refused to take, and I
the operations m.st generally, during the past ]
three days, have turned in favor of purchaiers, 4
The transactions, however, have been very irregu- ‘
iar, .and while we are freo to admit that in many £
instances they have been made at a slightly re- {
duced margin, the reduction was not of such a
rnarkod character as to compel us to reduce our ,
quotations, and we have consequently retained *
those current at thociose of tho prev.ous week, !
which, under all the csreumstances, wili approxi. J ]
mate as nearly as possible to the true position of i »
tho market at its close yesterday. The receipts of J
the week comprise 16,153 bales, and the sales in i
the same time foot up 6492 bales, nineteen bun ,
drod ot which were sold yesterday. The fol- j ,
lowing arotte transactions of the week, viz:— ’

9|a —. W e have had quite a change In the weath
er since the data of our last report, and there has !
been a heavy frost, sufficient to form ice, in this j
and the adjoining States, which we learn has also i
extended over a large portion of the Cotton region. \
We have nothing of in efest to communicate in re
lation to Long Cotton. So far as transactions are
concerned, there has not been enough doing to cs- !
tablish a market.
Corn —Tho receipts since our last comprise 2000 1
bushels, a portion of which was of extra quality,
and sold at 87 a 89c , and 1800 biuhels which are
under limits.
Flour. —The receipts up to this time have been j
light, and there is, at present, but a very limited !
supply on sale, which is held at high prices. The !
demand, which has been limited to small lots to
the city trade, has been supplied at prices rang g
Irom $94 a 94 per bbl.
Bacon —The m&rkot, which was quite active
throughout the whole of tho previous week, has
relapsed into a very quiet state; at least, we have
come to this conclusion from the smallness of the
lusiness reported to us—The prices current at the
close of the previous week we renew, which will
give a fair index of the state of the market at the
close of business, viz: Sides . prime, 8J a 84; com
mon, do., 8 a 84; Shoulders, 7 a 7|; and Hams from
6 to 15c , as iu quality.
Salt —There have been no arrivals this week,
aad there is none afloat. Store lots command
$l4O and $1.50 per sack.
Sugars —The transactions, so far as we have j
>een able to learn, have been confined to the sale ;

Ll\ ERPOOL, Oet, 27.—There is a considerable
the prio# of Bresditufie, .td U b7tf»s
| to be apprehended that they will continue to be
high during the winter, as no efficient assistance
from Foreign supplies can beexpocted until spring;
j the conviction that prices would cule considerably
lower after the harvest was so general, that few,
if any arrangements were made for new imports.
; The hope that Lusiness would become more active,
’ was based upon the expectation of moderate pri
i ces of food, and it must of necessity undergo much
’ | modification now. Although it is no doubt a great
' disappointment that these prices rule so high, yet
1 | there is a great difference between their being
. caused only by a temporary absence of Foreign
supplies, to their being the consequence of a scan
; ity harvest. Our farmers having la'ge quantit es
to dispose of, are now reaping the benefit of it. and
the money is only shifted from one class to anoth
er, remaining in the country. Money is not so
much in demand as has been, but credit has be
come more difficult. There is an uneasy feeling
apparent. Politics continue to absorb much at
tention.
The Cotton market is dull in spite of the repeat
ed advices from the United States, of much dam
age having been done to the crop. The eiroum
stanoe of our stocks nisdergoing now a gradual
diminution, is counteracted by the general reserve
practised in business, and by the very indifferent
accounts we continue to receive from Manchester.
Holders appear to have lost the heart to wait any
longer for tho long expected improvement, and put
their stocks fairly on the market.

The demand throughout the week was steady,
and the quotations for American were fully sup
ported. Brazil and Egyptians are in moderate re
quest. Surats continue in extensive demand; a
large public sale attempted to-day went off flatly.
To-day's sales are 7,000 bales, including 1,500
bales for export, Ac.
The Manchester market is as gloomy as before.
Jn many mills the hours of labor begin to be lim
ited to daylight only, which, if persevered in, will
tell more strongly day by day.
