[From the Charleston Evening News j
Synod of South Carolina.
Tbe hjnod of South Carolina resumed its ses
eion yesterday morning. After some unimport
ant preliminary business the meeting went into
an election of Directors of the Theological Sem
inary. when the following gentlemen were elect
ed: Rev. P. E. Bishop. Rev. D. McQueen, Rev.
S Frost, and Rev. D. Palmer, and Messrs, J. A.
Crawford, W. C. Dukes, and H. M. Burns.
The Board of Trustees of Oglelhrope Uni
versity made a statemnt of the state of that in
stitution, which was referred to the following
Special Committee : G. Howe, D.. D., D. E.
Fneiaon, J. L Kenedy, Ministers; J.*H.Simer
it, and 0. K. Douglas, Ekieis.
The Committee to whom had been referred
that poition of the report of tne Board of Di
rectors of tbe Theological Seminary relating to
an increase in the number of Professors,
made their report. It recom mends for the pres
« nt, a division of the Professorship of Theo
ry, one portion to embrace Didactic and Polem
ical Theology, and the other Pastoral Theology
and Sacred Rhetoric, the object being to contin
ue the duties of Theological Chair in the Protes
tor who fi ls it, limiting those duties to Pastoral
Theology and Sacred -Rhetoric, while the Pro
fessor to be ch.'v-irffc ould be restricted to those
of Didatic and tPnWrrhca! Theology, and distrib
uting the duties of tbe Professorship of Eciesias
tical History and Church Government amongst
ft.e various Protes* >tship?,a sufficient sum being
in the time raised for the endowment of a Fourth
Professorship.
A report was made by the Rev. J. H. Sage
from the Minority of the same Committee, sug
gesting the name of Dr. Palmar tor the vacant
Professo'ship of Ecclesiastical* and Poli
ty. Both repoits \ve:e in con
nection with the Report of the Boaqkof Direc
tors, taken up lor consideration. A\liseu6siou
ensued on the merits of the various-questions
involved, embracing the expiuTency of Soliciting
Dr. Thorn well to accept the Professorship of the
1 heological Seminary at Columbia, in liellbf the
Presidency of the South Carolina College. ./The
discussion had not terminated when the meeting
adjourned at 3 P. M., and rnet this morning
again at 9 o’clock. VT
The morning hour was occupied by this bod A
in hearing reposts on various subj-cts of little'
importance. Alter an hour spent in devotional
exercise, ReV. Mi, Baird, Agent of the Preshy- ,
terian Board of Publication. was heard in behalf 1
of the business of his agency—proposing, as a
most important measure, the procurement of a
complete set of the books ot the Board, on the
part of each congregation, as- a circulating library.
A Repoit in reL'ion to Oglethorpe Universi
ty, expressing a feeling ot deep interest in that
institution, was adop ed.
A resolution was adopted authorizing the
publication ot the sermon of Rev. Dr. Howe, de
livered at the opening ot the Synod.
The unfinished business—the filling of the
chairs in the Theological Seminary—was taken
up, and various propositions were offered, and
speeches were made on each, hut no decision
was arrived at when we went to press.
The impression jbp gaming ground, however,
that the removal ol Dr. Thorn well will cot be
effected.

A correspondent ol her Majesty ship Pluto, j
writes to the London Atbenceum, under date, j
Fernando. July Jo:
We have had a most exciting cruise. After )
leaving this place, the communicating with the !
senior officer at Loan do, we we.e sent up the
River Congo to settle : dispute between the mas- !
ter of an English merchant brig and some Por- j
tuguese A her this was arranged, we returned ‘
to Lo.ir.da for our letters, but the Polyphemus j
not arriving in time, the ship sailed agaiu for
the Congo, and I was left behind in one of our !
gags, with four kroomen, for the mail. During !
our stay I met, at the house of one of the com
missioners, one of the most extraordinary men I
have ever seen—Dr Livingstone, he has just ar
rived from the Cape overiaud, a most aiduous
undertaking, and one never accomplished before,
altbogh often attempted. His plan of proceed
ing differed very materially from any oi his pre
decessor®. Instead of setting out with halt a
hundred at endants, horses, bullock wagons, &c , |
he commenced his j iun ey cairying with him
only a sextant, gun, chronometer, tent, four ser
vants, and as many days provisions, retying on
Providence and ins gun lor a supply when these
were gone.
After leaving the Cape Colony, he was ob-
lived to travel a ions' w >y to tne noith-east in
older to avoid the deserts and hostile tribes in
their vicinity that lay on their left; crossing m
tr-isroutea gloat many branches ot the r.ver
Z'-mbegi and others, the names of which i have'
f lgotten, till he arrived at a large town. There,
i s the chn t was very hospitable, he remained a
short time to reciuit his health, having been I
nearly drowned and starved half a dozen times
during the nine months it took him to perlorrn
thi3 part oi the journey, and his’arm badly brc.
ken in two places by a lion. It appeared he had
wandered one evening lrom his attendants, alter
they had pitched their tents, in quest ot game
when he came suddenly on a large lion ciouch
ing down ready lor a spring at him; without
waiting a second he tired, and must have eeu
knocked down at the same moment and stunned,
as he remembers nothing trom the time he tired
till he was tound by his servants next morning;
when thf-y came up they tound the doctor inseu
„ sible and the lion lying dead alongside him.—
When he left the chief, who was very desirous
of finding a route to the westward lor the rans
mission of his ivory, gave him twenty lour or his
people to assist him on his journey.
After leaving he again travelled to the north- !
east until he auived in the parallel ol Loanda.— I
Now came the tug of war. He had upwards of a '
tnousand miles to travel across the unexplored
countries of our charts, a tract never hitherto
liodden by any white man,and wholly unknow n
even to the blacks he had seen as yet; however,
this part ot his journey proved to be the easiest,
and it was not till he arrived near Cassanga, on
the Portugese frontier, that he met with any mo
lestation. The country he found to be thickly
populated, and toe inhabitants very p aceabiy
disused. From their never having seen a j
white man beforp, you may lancy w*hat an ob- I
jectof curiosity he became to them; wherever he !
stopped the people irom far and near flocked ;
round him with astonishnaent pictured on their
countenances. As the doctor was verry much j
sunburnt, his color did not so much surprise them i
as his hair, w hich was very long, this was the j
object of attractions wherever he went, and high- j
Jy favored did those fancy themselves who be
came the possesseis of a lock of it.
Every tribe he met with had some idea of one
Supreme being and a future state of existence,
though they all worship, in addition, various an
imals that they hold sacred.* At every place he
stopped they supplied him liberally with provi
sions—and it was not. as I mentioned before, till j
he arrived near The Poituguese territories that
he met with any trouble.
There the inhabitants have been in the habit
of kidnapping the people lurther iuland.to sell to j
the Portugese for slaves, and fearing, should a
load be opened that way, it would spoil their
traffic, they became very troublesome and want
ed the doctor to pay toll nearly every step he
took; however, by putting on a bold front, he
managed to make bis way through, and arrived
at Loanda safely iu the beginning of June, ma
king it exactly two years since he left the Cape.
The doctor is very' much emaciated from the
hardships he has undergone, and has not recover
ed the use ot his arm perfectly yet; but as soon
as be is well be i« determined to return, trying
this time to find a shorter load than the one he
came by. He had the whole of his attendants
on board, and showed them over the ship ; hav
ing never seen salt water before, or anything
afloat larger than a canoe, they were very much
surprised and delighted, though they toid the doc
tor they would never be able to get any ot their
people to believe them on tbeir return, so per
tectly astonishing did everything appear to them.
