A Great Debate
Arrangements have been made with Capt. Hobson and Gov. Hanley
for them to appear together on the Alkshest Chatauqua Circuit in jeint
debate, the subject for discussion to be: “Resolved that the United States
should control the sea, bota in the Atlantic Ocean and in the Pacific
Ocean,” Captain Hobson to take the affirmative and Governor Hanley the
negative.
As is well known Mr. Hobson is the Nation's greatest exponert of
the largest possible navy. br. Hobson believes that the best way to pre
vent war is to be ready for war, and constantly and consistently urgdes on
the part of Congress a larder navy. But aside from his views cn the sub
ject, Mr. Hobson is one of the South's greatest men, being a logical and
exact thinker and an orator ¢f no mean ability.
. Mr. Hanley, who has been leading the forces of reform in his na
tive state, Indiana, for some years, and who was ounly recently governor
of that commonwezlth, is one of the leading if not the leading advocate of
disarmament of the nations. Ar. Hanley believes that war is contrary
to all principles of modern civilization, and that the copstant increase of
the Navy malkes the burden of taxation larger than it ousht to be, and
claims that in time it will become uncndurable. He shows by figures
that 78 per cent. of our federal taxes today are expended for the support
of the army and navy, past and present and future, and that the figures
are constantly increasing. Mr. Handley is. like Mr. Hobson, a logical
thinker, and also an orater. In fact, Mr. Hanley ranks as one of the Na
tion’s best orators aud greatest statesmen. As the subject of disarma
mentl) 7 before the public, this debate conducted in a dignified way,
for the sole purpose of informing and instructing the people will prove a
drawing card to the Fitzgerald Chatauqua.
