The many riends of Mr. Willis
Dykes and Miss Nancy Bro“'ni
were very *much surprised when
they learned of their marriagef
Sunday at the home of Mr. and
Mrs, Brown near Tifton. ‘
The bride is a beautiful woman
and of fine qualities, while the
groom is the son of a wealthy
farmer, Mr. J. K, Dykes. The
Ashtonites extend their heartiest
congratulations.
Did you ever ask yourself why
you should skake hards with a
person whom you know? lHere is
the reason; in the old days, when
every man who had any preten
tions to being a gentleman carried
a sword, it was the custom for
men when they met, to show that
they had no intentions of treach
ery, to offer one another their
weapon hands—that is the hand
that would be used to draw the
sword, and to withdraw the band
was usually the signal for a tight.
So fixed did this habit become
that long after men ceased to wear
swords they still offered the weap
on hand toa friend and declined
to offer it to an enemy. To this day
when one refuses to shake hands
with a person signities tha tyeu
are at war. Among savages,who
never carried swords, the practice
‘of shaking hands is unknown, and
it atfords them amusement to see
the white men do it.
