By the arrival of ISc steamship Alabama from Vera Cruz, at New Orleans, ih© papers of ihe latter chy have dates from the city of M -xico to the 4th iost .and from ban Ftancisco to the 4ih ol M iy—fourteen days ijter than hy previous advices Tile .Mexican papers ot the 4ih, Rive the following thrilling account of two leiuhle tires in California : Fro n Li T> ait and L’ non, published im Ihe City of Mexieu.uf the 4th J Ju*t- California is deeded Iy the country lur confligrtiinnr We have ©lieu haj occasion to notice the Ifrq-teiil fires to which San Francisco has been subjected. Lately we had t record the nearly complete destruction o. N -vaJi Cay ; to-div we have to notice two teirible ra astrophes, which hive reduced to ashes lire richest (sir's of San Francisco and Stockton. Our teadeis (©member. no doubt, :hat last year, on the 4ih ol M iy, I Si.: Francisco was in part coiisomeil t>y a tire winch destroyed ibe niercintile pari of this new born city en the 4th ol Miy, in tins year, as t were, in fatal commemoration of the anniversary—lor the fifth time in iw ivears—three - fuu t ths <l the business portion ot the city were again burnt to ashes. Never, says ‘he Alhi California, has such a terrible oontl igratioit occurred smee the burning of Moscow . The lire commenced a little alter II o'clock.during the nighiof the 31 May. in the second story of the work sh"p ol a ship painter, on Clay street,on the south-side of Portsmouth Square, and ne.tr the Grand Plan. When the ti’e was first discovered, the devouring ele ment hid mad.- but little progress, but all at once the building where the tire hid originated, the Ameiican House, and a furniture store on each side of it, were enveloped in dimes. The wind, winch was ai fir*t blowing gently, soon acquired ibe lorceof a hurricane * the fire-engines lushed to ihe spot, but their foreman and fi st engmrrr being absent from ihe city their help was brought to bear with less rapidity and effect. As soon as the fi:st three homes were enveloped in f! im-s,i’ b- came evidently impossible to subdue the fire, which tan iu be following course: On the west, it as cended Clay street, near to Dupont street; on the south, ii eros-ed Sacramento s.reet.near to California, passeu K’ari.ey street, and ©xien-fed, *n the south, crowing California,as far a Pme street; o i the east, along Pine street, it reached Gaiisomr street; and. on the tmtth, it ran towards C ilitornia, and tuitiing east, destroyed ati ihe liouses on Battery stleel, which (onus the upper l ti.it ot (tie cni.fi igrauon, with ihe exception ot the n nth east point, where, crossing Bntery street, it consumed several buildings as far at the waters of the biv. in another direction, the fire, in ttie beginning, ran i down C.aysueet to K-.irney street; it followed towards j tire north, a ! ong Keamey as far as Jackson st.; towards j the east, a long Jackson to M mtg miery.and to the noith j to Pacific street ; ou Ihe east to Broadway.and thence diagonally to Vallejo street, and finally, crossing Kat ie y str-et, in an eastern direction, it extinguished itself on the borders of the bay. In all thiscircuiri.u* tun.embracing a mile in length by hdt am If in widdi.it did not leave fifteen buildings unborned. There are some whose wails are still erect bit all their contents were consumed. Some vaults and sates have taiihtullv preserved their deposits in the midst of the dimes. Nineteen blocks ol houses have been destroyed ; the nu nberol buildings burnt is no* easily ascertained, but they must number at least fifteen hundred The total l<s- has been estimated at twenty in limns of dollars; the exact calculation most bring it to fifteen millions of dollars. The tire completed its destructive work in ten hours, the list building was nothing but a heap ol tains on the 4th, at 9 a. m. The scene wi affecting Thousand* of men, women and children, were running mad about the streets.— Toe city was lull of inhabitants without a shelter But what m tJe the spectacle more horrble, was to see the unfortunate beings, from time to t me, rushing liom tip- dimes, running into the streets; and, after useless attemp’s lo escape, tailing four weakness into ihe strett, beiure hundreds of spectators, unable to lend them help, two individuils were thus burnt alive in the streets; six others perished m the irn buildings of Messrs. Toafie .V McC thill. Light persons are known tihave talien victims ; twenty inhere were more or let a w.Hinded. Since the die, two tuert have been killed by the tailing rulin’. A I tire Sin Francisco pipers, witn ihe exception ol the Alla Calif■•rniu, were burnt. Two ol them, the Herald and th • Pacific News, have already resumed rbei: publication; the others will soon appear. Ten •lays have elapsed since the catasirophe. and already 2id or 3 hi houses hive been completely rebuilt, or will be whip. The energy of he population has not been afiei ted by this fifth and cruel misfortune. Take courage, says the Alla Calif ai nia —and in fact, business has but slightly beet) sus.ienJed. The commercial houses, in expectancy of the rebuilding ot their houses, havean n >unced that their offices and st res have been trans ferred into other parts of the city. The goods which were solow befrre the event, have, all at once, risen five times in value ; rents have in creased in the same p(uponion. Sun Francisco, in a word, was at the Lst dates, in a most strange commer cial situation. T.ie fii mol Brg yie &. C. foun ] fifteen hundred thousru I dollars in their sate, after the fire. The officers of the Caiotn-tfMe hive saved the funds contained in the edifice, by throwing them into a well; a milium ot dollars were thus secured. The following edifices have been destroyed:—The C i^t'n House, the U non Hole*, Parker House. A lel phi Theatre, Unmade M isruni, National Hotel, New World Hotel,Ci’y Hotel, Delmonico Hotel. Mnchanu Exchange, Ross’ Btiil ling, A uerican Hotel, Revere House, the offices ot ihe Steamship Company, the ships Ntaniic and General H urisoii, Arc. Titecootliraiu>ii it S nekton, taking into account the comparative importance ol the city, lias b-eu, per haps, q nte as disastrous as the one in S m Francisco. Tins rook place un the next day, the 5m ot May ; the fire began in anew and splendid bu IJing, known as the Merch mis’ Hotel; it is supposed that it was tired by some itl-doer who wi-hrd, by the burning of the prison, which stands next to the Merchant*’ Hotel, 10 facilitate tiie escape of the criminals- But the w ind at once blow.in the opposite direction, the end of the incendiary was fru-uiatcd. All the commercial houses on the Levee, (-ix excepted); all Main, all Cetiue street, all the houses on LI Dorado stiert, (two exopt ed,; and all the buddmgs on Hunter atreet, but three, were devoured by the element. 1 tie loss is estimated at $1,2W),W0. We will not undeitake to reproduce here ihe list of Victims trum these two catastrophes; they fill two columns ol lb- Alta Catijornia, and they aie not jet complete. Ii issutfL-icnt to say ihu in Sin Francisco, as well asat S oakum, very lew couimeicial houses, belonging to Americans or loreigners, have escaped. It was at first reported, that the fire in Sin Francisco was caused hy the imptudence or neglect of the ship plotters, u whose shop the tire begin ; hut these gen tleu ictt, Messrs. Biker and Mesarrve.bavepublicly de c-.ired that there was no light in their s:orc which could cao-e such an acctd-nt. Lver j thing leads to ihe belief that in San Francisco, as at S.uckton, the disaster was the work of an incendiary. When the peop'e, two months ago. wauled to apply tbe Lynch Law, by hanging the two emninils, S uart and Wildred, tbe rascally Australians who were in the coy, expressed (heir determination to bom Sin Fran cisco. They bad a ship ready in port; they were to trmapori on board all they eoald steal, and start, after having accomplished their diabolical prpct. This plan was made known to toe police. There is also a return of another tact of equal impor tance.
