BE KIND TO THY Hl'SBASD,
•Be gentle to thy husband,
Remember, all day long.
-Amid the din nnd tumult
lie battles with the throng.
Curiosity nnd jealously got the
upper hand of me; I wanted to sec
for myself, so I slid out of Lied sit
ting tint like a tailor on the iloor,
determined to hitch upjustas I sot,
inch at a time to the opening over
the hearth where the gun hooks
the dentil of Privnto L A Ballard,
A cat couldn’t been no stiller nr-
tcr a mouse, but my heart thumped
louder every hitch, just ns it will
when a man goes to do what ain’t
right. Well, jest as 1 had gained
the right pint to look over at 'cm,
just tilted the floor—down I went,
tow shirt, fastened to the gun hooks
and there I hung, blindfolded, like a
squirrel half skinned, right over my
rival and sweetheart, ready for bath
ing.
I was taken down by Jerusba’s
Aliil When the night lias gathered father, and next morning camo to
‘home, | the conclusion to court a fresh gal—
the 'Hived one to his rest, | in a new locality.
No wonder that noble brow,
Grows clouded with the care
That presses on his heart and hands |
While he is struggling there.
Be gentle—if no smile appears,
There's Bttfrow in the breast.
•yttit miss the welcome j
!Tls true,
voice,
Whose tones are always kind,
raise the cloud that
And
long to
casts
A shadow oft his mind.

LATE FROM THE BATTLE
FIELD.
Petersburg, July G.
The Yankees buried over 500 ot
their dead at shirley; and left over
100 of their wounded, who fell into
our hands on Saturday morning last.
Our pickets now occupy Shirley.—
Nine more prisoners were brought
to Petersburg. They say that Mc
Clellan is in a strong position at
Berkeley; that he has been Vein forc
ed by Shields’ division; and that he
now has SO,000 or 100,000 men, and
will give battle.
Balloons went tip yesterday and
to-day—the wagon train is still visi
ble, and the tent's of the enemy dot
the country Tor miles.
A member of Sickles’ brigade
says that out of 5,000 men not 500
are left.

Mobile, July 5.
A special dispatch to the tho Mo-!

The Memphis Argus and Ava-
lanche have both been suppressed—
tho former for asking Grants’ per
mission to publish the Southern ac
count of McClellan's defeat at Rich
mond, nnd the latter for alledged
incendiary sentiments published in
their paper.
The Confederate pickets arc now
within four miles of Memphis, and
warm work is expected soon. Look is
out for startling events. j p (
Seventeen moro of the enemy’s
pickets were found dead on last
Wednesday morning.
Northern papers are perfectly si
lent on McClellan’s “on-to-Rich-
