yesterday, at the camp of the Twenty-ninth
Georgia Regiment., over the body of Private
John M. Reynolds, of Co. D, said regiment.
The jury found that deceased came to his death
from wounds inflicted on his person by one
Samuel Fuller, of the same regiment, in a
quarrel which took place on the 10th ult., while
playing at marbles. Upon the facts given in
evidence, they found a charge of manslaughter

FOR MAYOR;
THOMAS HOLCOMBE.
FOR ALDERMEN :
Biyouac in the Field, Va., )
~ September 22d, 1862. j
Mr. Editor .*—I herewith enclose yon a list of
casualties of the Fiftieth Georgia Regiment in
the battles of Sunday 14tb, and Wednesday,18th
inBt. This list was furnished me by Adjutant
Fleming.
It will be seen that the 50th suffered severely,
losiDg more than half the men engaged in the
firBt affair, in twenty-two minutes. This regiment
is hot alone in Its terrible losses. The whole
brigade suffered, excepting, perhaps, a South
Carolina regiment. G- n. Drayton placed his
brigade in a road, to receive an attack from the
hill where the enemy wsvs expected. The turn
pike ran through a gorge, there being high hills
on either side, and a stone fence on the lower
side of the road. The brigade had scarcely taken
position before the enemy appeared on all
sides. There'was no time for thought. The
men were ordered to protect themselves the
best they conld behind this stone fence, which
was only, a partial protection from one'side.
The enemy from the opening of the gorge had
a clear sweep down the whole line; while those
on the heights, on either side, had every ad
vantage, being protected by trees and rocks. In
the short space of twenty-two minutes. 6ver
half of the brigade lay dead or wounded in the
road. A retreat was ordered, but too late to save
the brave men from the murderous fire of a
vastly superior foe. All the dead and most of
the wounded were left on the field.
During the whole of that bloody tragedy hun
dreds of men refused to lie down, but stood
erect, and coolly fought against every odds.
In tho affair of Wednesday, (battle of Sharps-
burg) I witnessed the part taken in the closing
fight, by the 50th. They followed our brigade
into the fight, and took position next to the
15th. In the charge, they, led by Col. Kearse,
acted most nobly. They charged over the hill,
and took position behind the same stone fence
behind which the Fifteenth fought with much
effect. The regiment did not number more
than sixty or seventy men.
I was told yesterday that Lawton’s Brigade
was badly cut up, at Charlestown, on
Saturday, nearly the whole brigade being
either killed or captured. The particulars of
the affair I was unable to obtain. I trust it is not
as bad as reported. A Major of the brigade in
formed Dr. McTyre, of the 50th Regiment, that
Lieutenant Judson Butts, of the 31st Georgia,
was cither killed or captured. I have been in
a state of dread ever since, but it may be too
true. If he is captured, he will 6oon be restored
to his friend a. If killed, many a heart will be
made to bleed.
It is astonishing how few casualties there
were in the 17Lh, in the battle of Sharpsburg.
It did not have a man killed, and only five or
six wounded. Not a man in Company “D” re
ceived a scratch. We were evidently protected
by the shadowing wing of a good Providence.
The estimated lo c s of the enemy I have net
heard, but it is put down at fifteen to one. I
must have seen at one poiut three hundred
dead Yankees, and I know I did not see more
than a dozen dead Southerners. We were hotly
engaged for two hours, some of the men fir
ing 150 rounds ! V. A. S. P.

“The Child’s Index.”—We are in receipt
the first number of this excellent little monthly,
published bs Rev. Samuel Boykin, in Macon
and devoted exclusively, as its name indicates,
to the instruction and amusement of juveniles.
It is a worthy project, and our friend Boykin
has our best wishes for his-'success. The
number before us bears flattering testimony
to the talent of the good judgment of the
editor and his correspondents for tho task be
fore them. A great mistake, though, was made
in giving the paper a thorough sectarian char
acter, and thus confining its circulation, for the
most part, to the children of Baptist parents.
It is bad for the publisher and worse for the
public, for the country needs just such a paper,
only that it be free from denominational bias,
and adapted to general circulation among the
children of the South. We hope it is not yet
too late to make the change.
Price of the Child’s Index: 50 cents per an
num. We will cheerfully receive and forward
subscriptions. '
Rl-Arming the Paroled Soldiers.—Two gentle
men from the vicinity of Washington Inform us, on
what they esteem credible authority, that the Yankee
government Is playing a game of stupendous villainy
with the Confederate government.
The report was rife in Washington that the soldiers
our army captured at Harper’s Ferry were brought to
that city from ihe Relay in the -ca's and immediately
marched to the Arsenal, where they were re-armed
And in order to cover up the shameful. treachery, the
number of the regiments were changed or their uni
forms in order to escape detection t or example, the
89th New York would be simply changed to the 189 th.
These gentlemen t named no regiment thus changed,
for they were not In the city—as they rest under the
ban ef being - secessionists—but they obtained their
information Trom a gentlemeu who had ridden cut
with a paroled Sergeant. This Sergeant had been or
dered to report the number of his men the next morn
ing, lor the purpose of being armed, and he expressed
bis opposition thereto.
° ne , of rach importance that it de-
monda inveatigaiion, for what does our cause train it
paroled men, either willingly of forcibly, take no arms
acauut ns previous to being exchanged! P

after its occupation by Gen. Price. One hun
dred and six jolly looking Federate who had
been out on a scout or “steal,” came riding
through our lines, and found themselves in a
rebel camp, and were marched off to ‘prison

Up to this time 460 sick soldiers have been received
and successfully treated in this institution, and at this
time one hundred and twelvoVare lying sick in our
Hospital.
I make this statement merely to show our contrib
utors that they have been instrumental in relieving «he
pressing wants of that number of tho bravo defenders
of our seaport city, and to the generous and libera 1
hearted donors of this Hospital, we desire to return
our most sincere and heartfelt gratitude for the many
favors and kindnesses the sick at osr Hospital have
received at their hands.
The sick unite with us in this expression of gratl
tude, and I desire to return my thanks to those noble-
hearted ladies who so generously continue to visit our
Hospital, and by their bind deeds of benevolence cause
the tear of gratitude to flow down tho manly cheek of
many of our brave soldiers.
To our contributors, one and all, lot me beseech yon
not to become weary in well doing; sickness is still
increasing, and the immediate want of the sick soldier
must be provided for; at this time hundreds are sick in
camps and have not suitable places provided for them.
Winter is approaching and we stand in immediate and
urgent need of supplies incident to that season. We
need a larger supply of blanket^ quilts, comforts, and
bed clothing of all description. To supply the necessi.
ties of the brave defenders of our city and Slate, we
lay before you the wants and the claims of the Georgia
Hospital.
Our only apology we offer, in thu9 urging the re'
newed cl aim b of our Hospital, is ihe want of the sol
diers and the noble generosity of your hearts.
liHoping that yon will lend a sympathetic ear to our
plea, and that our sick may continue to enjoy your
benevolence and bo well provided for, I subscribe my
