The largest sum paid bv any theatre for tux during the period above named was that paid by Nildo's Garden, amounting to £4, 778 UJ. The smallest sum paid by any theatre between tho foregoing dates, was that paid by the Old IDwery Theatre, amounting to £l,lfilol. II is a paramount duty of a .Med ical Ollieer of the Army to maintain the discipline of tlu* soldier, during his resi dence in Hospital, at the highest point of etliciency compatible with the nature and treatment of the disease or injury lie is siill'eriiig from. The General Hospitals in this Department have hitherto been remarkable for their excellent discipline. Tho Medical Director regretted to llnd in his recent, inspections the uimiilitury neg lect of regulations in regard to dress and general iliseiplinejlieeaielessand 1111- solilierly hearing of many of the convales cents and atteiidants;and either the entire absence of the customary compliments between the olliecrs and men, or the slov enly manner in which they were paid mill returned. Respect !<> superiors is not confined to obedience on duty, hut must he extended to all occasions, it is always the duty of the inferior !<» accost or oiler first, the proper salutation, and of the superior to return such compliment ary notice. Hereafter existing regula tions and orders in regard to discipline, proper compliments, and dress, must ho rigidly enforced, and all infractions from discipline, or disobedience of orders, must he promptly punished. The atten tion of all olliecrs on duly in General Hos pitals in this Department, is called to paragraphs 25B, 251, 255, 25(5, and 257 Revised Regulations of the Army, lHUB, auil to General Orders, No. 157, Head quarters. Department of the South, se ries 1804. Whenever an ollieer enters ft Ward tho Ward-master must command nfie.-iliou, on which the patients, who tire able to do so, will rise and stand in the position of attention until tho ollieer has passed out. Whenever a patient, attendant, or guard meets an ollieer within tho pre cincts of the Hospital, he will oiler tho customary salutation; if seated, ami with out particular occupation, he will rise on his approach, or if standing, he will turn towards the ollieer for the same purpose. The ollieer will acknowledge tho sain to in a respectful manner. At inspection each man’s articles of clothing, which may he in the wards, will lie neatly folded and laid on the foot of the bed. Boots and shoes, well brushed, will he placed on the floor at tho foot of the bed. Nothing must he hidden under the bedstead. 9 Every patient in Hospital, who is able, will wash lii.s face and hands at least every morning, and his feet twice a week, and will take a geueral hath once a week. Those who are unable to leave their beds, should have their hands and faces wash ed by the nurses, and the surface of the body sponged often enough to maintain cleanliness. The attendants are especially enjoined to he cleanly in their person* 5 , neat in their dress, and soldierly in their hearing. No attendant or patient in the U. .s’. A. General Hospital in this Department must leave the limits of the Hospital un less he is provided with a pass signed by tlu* Medical Ollieer of the Day without having on Ids proper uni form, his coat buttoned up, clothing and shoes well brushed, and the number of his regi ment and the letter of his company on his cap. Enlisted men and civilian nur ses must not he permitted to wear hospi tal dressing-gowns or slippers outside the wards. II. The Hospital .Steward charged with the administrative duties of a .Military Hospital, is designated the (7ti>f >7fir,in'/. lie may he se/.v/ei/ by the .Surgeon in charge from the stewards assigned to him, solely on account- of merit and known capacity, ami not by seniority of war rant. As an enlisted man he owes re spect ami prompt obedieneo to all orders to his military superiors. Ho should al ways wear his undress uniform in the Hospital. On musters and inspections lie must he in lull dress, with side arms. The chief steward must pay hro risi/s duihl to every part of the hospital, viz; at nine o’clock, A. .M., and at evening, between tatoo and taps. At these regu lar visit a. he will note tho condition, die- eipline, eleanliiiesn, \enIllation,, warming and lighting <:f the wards, kitchens, mess-halls, bath-rooms, and latrines, and I10 will report to the surgeon iu charge all Irregularities, abuses, infractions of discipline, or neglect of duty that may come under hi.: notice, necessity of re pairs, or other wants. He will see that the ration returns are made out, the ra tions received, property kept, and econ omically issued and the prescribed daily diet table observed. He will he respon sible for the ellieient administration of the clerical duties of the hospital. III. A .Meteorological Register (Form 11, Revised .Medical Regulations 18GB), must he kept daily in every General and Boat Hospital in this Department, and transmitted monthly to the Surgeon Gen eral's Olliec by the Surgeon in charge. In cases where the services liuvo been ren dered iu the field, the certificate append ed to the account should state that fact, otherwise the increased allowance for field services eauuot bo paid. 5. All accounts for service should ho in duplicate, and should be certified by tho commanding ollieer of the force with which tlio physician is serving, or the Surgeon in charge of the hospital, and approved by the Medical Director of the Division, Army Corps, Army, or Depart ment. Giro. No. 21, S. G. O., 18(53.—5th.— The mere approval of an account will not secure its passage through the Treasury. The signature of the certifying ollieer must he placed in tho blank space inuuf- tji'tlfh/ /a •/mi' tho curt if icutf, and not, as now frequently occurs, in some other part of the account, thus leaving the certificate unsigned. ISfi;5, to September ‘JO, 18(53, inclusive,’’ is not one month, hut one month and one day. It should read, “from August 20, 18GG, to September 10, 18(53, inclusive,” being one month: 8th. When a Contract- Physician has been absent from duty, tho certifying of ficer must, state the reason and duration thereof. Contract Physicians are requested to use tlio blank printed accounts furnished by this olliee; an abundant, supply of which will he issued to every hospital, post, Ac., 011 the request of the Surgeon in Charge or Commanding Officer.
