SAVANNAH DAILY REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY MORNING. AUGUST 16, 1865. S A V A N N AH: WEDNESDAY MORNING, AIG’I 16. Extortion. It is but a few days since we invited tbe attention of capitalists from all parts of the country to the pressing need of more dwelling houses in our city. Within the last forty-eight hours we have been waited upon by several of the most re spectable citizens in Savannah, who have solicited us to expose certain parties in this city—landlords—who are now im posing upon our citizens, and defraud ing them by wholesale, by charging the most exorbitant rents for dwelling houses. One gentleman, who is a very violent se cessionist, told us frankly that he “hated us like poison and the d—d Black Re publican sheet,” but he was “willing to confess that these rent extortioners were charging enormous rates for the purpose of compelling the Yankees in business and living here to flee from' the city, or fail and lose money,” but he says “the scoundrels are treating their friends just as bad as their enemies.” The poor people are likewise complaining of these unjust demands made upon them, for the very unhealthy and comfortless abodes that they are obliged by necessity to in habit. Whether there is any real foun dation for the funny story of our secesh informant, we cannot say, although we believe him to be not only a man of veracity, but an intelligent citizen. It strikes us as a very queer and rash ex periment for rational men to resort to for the purpose of expelling ^he “Yan kees” from Sjavannah, and we would offer our advice to these deluded landlords to desist from their Utopian schemes, for this is a poor expedient, and will not accomplish their designs. The military commander at this post, if we are not greatly mistaken, is invested with sufficient power to pro tect the rights of all, and in fact that is his sole mission, to see that justice is done all jrarties, the rich and poor, high and low, white and black, and if our eit- zens who feel aggrieved and oppressed at these exorbitant charges will only call upon Gen. Davis; Commanding the Post, they will And him a courteous officer, who is willing and anxious to help our people out of the thousand and one dif ficulties that surround us in the new and peculiar position in which we find our selves placed. The result of this cruel crusade on the almost empty pockets of our impover ished people will be to draw' the imme diate attention of Northern capitalists to the rich field now open for investment in real estate and building operations in Savannah, and when this is done the ex tortioners will only have incurred a bless ing upon our city and helpless citizens. Let the cry of alarm be sounded throughout the North that we want capi tal here to be invested in real estate, and if we can prove to the shrewd capital ists, as we surely can, that there is mon ey in the scheme we advocate, we shall soon hear the carpenter’s hammer and behold our burnt district rising like Phoenix from its ashes. Let our war cry be death and destruction to extortioners. Premature.—Lt. Col. York informs us that tbe report in yesterday morning's Republican of his retirement from the post of District Provost Marshal on account of the anticipated departure of his Regiment tor the North, h as not yet really taken place. Our reporter was in error in an nouncing the opening of the Court yesterday by Lt. Col. Holbrook. We are always ready to make the amende honorable. Savannah Markets. Republican Office, Aug. 1C, 1865. New Idea is Dressing the Hair.—A gossippy female Paris correspondent tells bow ladies achieve for tbeir tresses tbe golden color so mnch in vogue in the gay capital: “At the musical parly, (she says) as I could not talk, 1 looked about, and one thing which amused me was the surprising change which has taken place in the appearance of some of tbe lasbionable belles. The brunettes are turned into blondes— at least their locks are tnrned from dark to light. It is said that brown hair, sieeped in champagne, will become ot that golden bue loved and painted by Titian. One hears that this has been done by the beautiful lady whose marriage was a nine days’ wonder last season; tbe result is variously canvassed; some say she has spoilt herself, others declare she never looked so handsome. I am more than doubtful of tbe wisdom of try ing such experiments with nature. Gold and silver powdep is much worn in tbe bair, but it is hardlv pretty. At present there is an infinite variety in the style of coiffure; and those who have taste adopt the manner ot -Wearing tbe bait which suits them’ best Some beads are sur* Quoted by a perfect forest of hair—when this ot form u Horifiowl to general effect. The wreaths have usually two or three humming-birds or other bright-feathered crea- tares, daintily hovering over the flowers—the effect is pretty. Besides this, the bouquets and head dresses are filled with bright beetles; »n short, the art displayed now in the manufacture of flowers is really admirable This is quite a movement in the right direction, for ornaments, if worn at alt, should alwsys be of the best. ■ • NORTH CAROLINA- The Raleigh (N. C.) Progress publishes the following: „ State of North Carolina, \ Johnston County, August 1, 1865. > To llis Excellency IV. )V- Holden, Governor of North Carolina : We, the undersigned, citizens of Smithfield, Johnston county, respectfully. beg leave to make a statement of facts to your Excellency, and to ask your Excellency’s protection and advice. About the first of last week, a man who says his name is Greene came to our village for the ostensible purpose ■ of getting up and organ izing a school f or the negroes or freedmen.— He also represents himself to be a preacher or minister of the gospel, and as such, demanded the Baptist Church for the purpose of preach ing to them,{threatening the terrors of the mil itary in case his demand should not be com plied with. The members of the church did not comply with his demand, for the following reasons, to wit: They have a regular called pastor of the church, who has it in charge, and it is against the rules to allow any and everybody to preach in it, and while they are perfectly willing for any Christian gentleman, with proper credentials, to preach in their church, they do not think from the manner in which the said Mr. Greene has conducted him self since his arrival that he is entitled to any favors or respect from any one who calls him self a gentleman. He came in a boisterous, braggadocio manner, demanding the church and academy as a matter of right, and threat ening vengeance if they were not given to him. He pnt up at a negro’s, and his associates have been none but negroes since he came. And when for these reasons the church was refused to him, he called together a crowd of negroes and asked for volunteers to break open the church for him. And a'ter he could get no volunteers, we understand that he telegraphed to some military post for a garrison of soldiers for this place, and not knowing what kind of representations he might make, we have thought proper to lay this plain statement of facts before your Excellency, assuring yon of onr willingness to do right, and giving you the true reasons why we were unwilling to let the said Greene have the church, believing, as we do, that he is a very bad man—a Jacobin emissary, sent out from the hot-bed of North ern Jacobins, for the purpose of getting up strife, difficulties between tbe whites and freedmen, thereby to start a war between the two races—to end we know not where. We assure your Excellency again, that no gar rison of soldiers is necessary for this place to make the citizens do rightly and submit to tbe laws. We are all a unit in favor of a oordial support of both the State and United States ad ministrations, and what has been done has been solely the refusal of the church for the reasons above stated. Therefore we leave the matter in the bands of your Excellency, confident that whatever Steps can be taken, will be taken in wis dom and justice. [Signed] James M. Carter, Alford Holland, Wm. Thrin, J, B. Abeil, Jas. Roberts, W H. Avera, S. R. MorgaD, M. B. Beckwith, Rufus Lynch, James Predin, Sr , J. T. Co b, A. F. Telfair, James H. Parker, Wm. H. Morning, Jas. L. Beckwith. The Progress says : “As for Mr. Greene himself, he will soon reap the just reward of his fanaticism by being dis placed from the position in which he has caused so much trouble. His business as a preacher or teacher is not to incite or inflame, but to soothe and pacify; and if he were a true Christian, he would teach justice and submission rather than insurrection. His influence over the blacks amonnts to nothing, as is evident in their refusal to assist him in opening the church by force.— The masters and mistresses of these people, who, in spite of laws to the contrary, taught them while they were yet in bondage, to read and write, will, as soon as affairs become settled, do more for tbe freedmen than a million such fanatics as Greene. On his representation some of tbe eitizens whose names are appended above have been arrested, and are now in confinement; but we have the best assurance that they will be released, and that he will probably be punished. At any rate, we know that his removal has baen recommended to the association which he represents.” MARINE INTELLIGENCE. SA VANNA If, A UG UST 15. ARRIVED.
