POETRY. THE ftALLAD OF BOUIEEABAfSSE. A street there is in Paris famous, For which no rhyme our language yeilds, Rue Neuva des Petits-Champs its name is, The New street of the Little Fields; And here’s an inn, not rich and splendid, But still in comfortable ease, In which, in youth. I oft attended To eat a bowl of Bouillabaisse. This Bouillabaisse a noble dish is, A sort of soup or broth, or brew, A hotch-potch of all sorts of fishes That Greenwich never could outdo, Green herbs, red peppers, muscles, saffern, Soles, onions, garlic roach, and dace All these you eat at Terre’s tavern, Id that one dish ot Bouillabaisse, Indeed, a rich and savory stew tis, And true philosophers, methinks, Who love all sorts of natural beauties, .Should love gocd victuals and good drinks. And Cordelier or Benedictine Might gladly sure bis lot embrace, Nor find a fast day too afflicting, Which served him up a Bouillabaisse. I wonder if the house still there is ? Yes, here the lamp is as before, The smiling, red-cheeked ecaiilere is Still opening oysters at the door. Is Terre still alive and able ? I recollect his droll grimace, He’d come and smile before vour table, And hope you liked your Bouillabaisse. We enter—nothing’s changed or older— “How's Monsieur Terre, waiter, prav ?” The waiter stare3 and shrugs his shoulder— “Monsieur is dead this many a day,” “It is the lot of saint and sinner, So honest Terre’s run his race ?” "What will Monsieur require for dinner V” “Say, do you still cook Bouillabaisse?” “Ah, oui, Monsieur,” is the waiter’s answer, “Quel vin Monsieur desire-t-il ?” “Tell me a good one.” ‘That I can, sir ; The Chambe-tin with yellow seal.” “So Terre’s gone,” I say, and sink in Mv old accustomed corner place; “He’s done with feasting and with drinking, With Burgundy and Bouillabaisse.” My old accustomed corner here is, The table still is in the nook, Ah 1 vanished manv a busy year is, The well-known chair since last I took. When first I saw ye, cari luoghi. I d scarce a beard upon mv face, Ard now, a grizzled, grim old fogy, I sit and wait for Bouillabaisse. Where are you, old companions trusty Of early days, here met to dine ? Come, waiter, quick, a Hagon crusty, I’ll pledge them in good old wine. The kind old voices and old (aces My memory can quick retrace, Around the board they take their places. And share the wine and Bouillabaisse. There's Jack has made a wondrous marriage, There's laughing Tom is laughing yet, There’s brave Augustus drives his carnage, There’s poor old Fred in the gazette; O'er James’ l ead the grass is growing— Good Lord ! the world has wagged apace Since here wejset the claret flowing. And drank and ale the Bouillabaisse. Ah, me! how quick the days are flitting, I mind me ol a time that’s gone, When here I’d sit, as now I’m sitting, In this same place, but not alone. A fair young form was nestled near me, A dear, deir face looked fondly up, And sweetly spoke and smiled to cheer me —There’s no one now to share my cup. I drink it as the Fate’s ordain it— Come, fill it and have done with rhyme; Fill up the lonely glass and drain if, In memory of dear old times. Welcome the wine, whate’er the seal is, And sit you down and say your grace. With thankful heart, whate’er the meal is— Here comes the smoking Bouillabaisse. ^Thackeray. SEPTEMBER. BT OEOBGE ARNOLD. Sweet is the voice that calls,*" From babbling waterfalls In meadows where the downy seed are flying; And soft the breezes blow And eddying come and go I n faded gardens where the rose is dying. Among the stubbled corn The blithe quail pipes at morn, The merry partridge drums in hidden places, And glittering insects gleam Above the reedy stream Where busy spiders spin their flimly laces. At eve, cool shadows fall Across the garden wall And on the clustering grapes to purple turnings And pearly vapors lie Along the Eastern sky Where the broad harvest moon is redly burning. Ah, soon on field and hill The winds shall whistle chill, And patriarch swallows call their flocks together To fly from frost and snow. And seek tor lands whe-e blow The fairer blossoms of a balmier weather. The pollen-dusted bees Search for the honey-lees That linger in the last flowers of September, Whole plaintive mourniog doves Coo sadly to their loves Of the dead Summer they so well remember.' The cricket chirps all day, “0, fairest Summer, stay 1” The squirril eyes askance the chestnuts browning; The wild fowl fly afar Above the foamy bar And hasten Southward ere the skies are frowning. Now comes a fragrant breeze Through the dark cedar trees And round about my temples fondly lingers, In gentle playfulness _ Like to the soft caress Bestowed in happier days by ioving fingers. Yet through a sense of grief Comes with the falling leaf, And memory makes the Summer doubly pleasant - In all my Autumn dreams A futu r e Summer gleams Passing the fairest glories of the present! [ Harper s Magazine for September. SAVANNAH DAILY REPUBLICAN. TUESDAY MORNING. SEPTEMBER 12. 1865. BUSINESS CARDS Gross Outrage.—We learn that a day or two since a band of lawless individuals made an attack on the premises of a gentleman living near Cartersville, injuring him and his prop erty to a considerable extent. The facts be coming known in Cartersville, a party was made up to go in pursuit of the outlaws. They were found and a conflict ensned which re sulted in the killing of four of the scoundrels and mortally wounding one of the party in pur suit. We regret exceedingly being called on to chronicle this the first thing that smacks of guerrilla - warfare in North Georgia. Affairs in that section, and, in fact, ail other sections of the State, have been progressing so quietly since the close of the war that we had begun to feel confident that we should be cursed with no such outrages. It is mortifying to all peace- loving men to have this damper cast upon their labors for the restoration of civil law. We hope prompt measures will be taken to sup press the band entirely. For all who are so lost to the manifest interest of the State as to try to inaugurate a guerrilla warfare there is but one proper punishment—they shonld be liung as soon as caught, like any highway rob ber. We trust the Jaw-abiding citizen^ will aid the authorities to the full extent of their powers in bringing all such offenders to justice.—Atlanta Netn Era, 2d inst. BOUT. P. YOBK, M. E. WILLIAMS, J.
