    SAVANNAH DAILY REPUBLICAN. THURSDAY MORNING. SEPTEMBER 14. 1866.
POETRY
To the Memory of Oapt. Si P. Goulding,
8KVENTH KENTUCKY CAVALRY,
117(0 Jell April 107/, 1865, while leading a charge
near Benton, Alabama.
Another atar hath fallen which lata in splendor
rose,
And in our hearts is darkness the grief-tried
only knows :
Nor can we quell the sorrow which comes like
a wave, ... n
When we think of him now sleeping in the cola
and lonely grave.
A hero he was truly—that his own brave cotnr
rades tell;
And his memory must be cherished with the
patriots we mourn,
For no more a valiant one has ever from the
battle-field been borne.
Urging e’er his comrades to follow in the thick
est of the strife,
Showing them he loved his country even more
than he did life ;
And before he fell he told them to press onward
in the fray:
“Come on, boys, for it will never, it will never
do to stay.”
We mourn him and we miss him, but he is
blessed for e’er,
Where comes no scenes of parting, no sigh or
a tear ;
And friends who meet together to rehearse
again, the tales
Of his deeds of valor, and his early death be
wail. Selma.
PEACE.
BT PHOEBE CARY.
O Land, of every land the best,
') Land, whose glory shall increase;
Now in your whitest raiment drest
For the great festival of peace :
Take from your flag its folds of gloom,
And let it float undimmed above,
Till over all our vales shall bloom
The sacred colors that we love.
On mountain height, and hill-top low,
Set Freedom’s beacon fires to burn;
Until the midnight sky shall show
A redder pathway than the morn.
Welcome, with shouts of joy and pride,
Your veteraus from the war-path’s track;
You gave your boys, untrained, untried ;
You bring them men and heroes back.
And shed no tear, though think you must
With sorrow' of the martyr’d band;
Not even for him whose hallowed dust
Has made our prairies holy land.
Though by the places where ihey fell,
The places that are sacred ground,
Death, like a sullen sentinel,
Paces his everlasting round.
Yet when they set their countiy free
And gave her traitors fitting doom,
They left their last great enemy,
Baffled, beside an empty tomb.
Not there, but risen, redeemed, they go
Where all the paths are sweet with flowers ;
They fought to give us peace, but lo!
They gained a better peace than ours.

THE RAILROAD EXPLOSION.
Complete destruction oj Sir Cars—Seven Per
sons Instantly Killed—Nearly Two Hundred
More or Less Hurt.
Nashville, Friday, Sept. 8.
The explosion yesterday on the Northwestern
Railroad was a terrible affair. The train con
sisted of eight cars and passenger coaches, and
there were nearly two hundred persons oa board.
The two foremost cars contained powder, shot
and shell, and it was supposed, sparks from the
locomotive communicated with the powder
through cracks in the car causing the explosion.
Seven persons were killed outright, and nearly
all rece:ved more or less injury. The fireman
was killed, the engineer badly injured and the
conductor slightly. Among the slightly injured
was Mr. Van Valkenburg, Assistant Superin
tendent of Telegraph. All the cars were blown
to pieces except the two cars in rear. The en
gine was badly wrecked. The concussion was
terrific, and shook the buildings in town like an
earthquake.
Ninnetota Republican Stale Conven*

St. Paul, Sept. 5.

nominated Gen. W. R. Marshall for Gover
nor ; Hon. T. H. Armstrong for Lieutenant-
Governor ; Lieut. Col. Rogers for Secretary of
State; Gen. C. Schafer for Treasurer, and

Resolutions affirming that neither a man’s
color, race nor birthplace takes away his po
litical rights ; that no portion of our subjects
shall remain degraded and ignorant; that this
nation shall not allow the Imperial Govern
ment to rule Mexico, and demanding our gov
ernment to force the withdrawal of the inva
ders, were passed.
A resolution approving President Johnson’s
military and civil course was voted down.
Wisconsin Republican Slate Conven

Madison, Wis., Sept. 7.
The Republican Convention to-day nomina
ted Charles R. Gill for Attorney-General.—
The convention adhered to the majority re

Dr. Hand’s Specific.
T HE oldest and most reliable medicine for the cure
of Spermatorhowi, Semina! Weakness, Loss of Pow
er, &c. This medicine has stood the test of over thir
ty years and has always proved a success.
DR. RAND'S SPECIFIC is exhibited in the form ot
pills, made np entirely of substances that have a speci
fic effect npon the generative organa. Most persons
associate the idea of operations upon the bowels from
taking any kind of pills. The Specific of Dr. Rand is
not intended as an evacuating meihoine. Its medici
nal virtues are expended entirely upon the impaired
regenerative organs. The pills are not unpleasant to
the taste, and many persons masticate them with im
punity before swallowing them; which plan we would
always recommend, as affording the spmiiest way to
get the effect of the remedy.
