As the period for our annual charter
election approaches, the friends of both
parties are organising for the contest.
We notice a card in each of the morn
ing papers recommending Mayor Conley
for re-election; and in the 4th Ward
two tickets have been put in nomina
tion. A meeting is called by the Amer
ican party to-night, at the City Hall, to
nominate officers for the 2d Ward. The
names of one or two independent can
didates, who are willing to serving the
public in the capacity of City Fathers,
are also announced. So the contest is
increasing in interest, and is likely yet
to be a warm one. The number of per
sons registered and entitled to vote, is
1128, somewhat less than the usual
number.

We noticed Tucker & Verkins, Ar

send a likeness to all their friends, as is
the custom now-a-days, these gentle- j

is no institution of the day more uni- j

Compound Illuminating V. ( Off Gas.
When several months ago wo first
railed public attention to the new pro- |
cess for manufacturing Gas from light
wood and water, many, of our readers
were disposed to sneer at our credulity,
and some went so far as to make some .
allusions to Paise, “ the great shot
at,” who for many years was working
at an invention for making Gas from
water. But the Dispatch claims to be
long to Hie progressive school, and dis
cards nothing, simply because it is new
or improbable. Wo saw the Gas made, i
stud were willing to gusli forward, even
against the popular belief, an enterprise
that promised such advantages to the
whole public.
Since that time, capitalists of our
.
city have taken hold of the matter, or
ganised a company, and put works in
■-. *cn. V-. i I'H'vFn. at BiTxeiia, '
who bought the first lights sold in this
section, has had this Gas in use for se
veral months ; and recently the Citron- ;
.■A S( Scntjnel building has been iliunii- j
nated by it. The editor in speaking of '
it in this morning’s paper, says :
“For the last two weeks, we have j
been astonishing the good people of our i
city and all visitors, hv lighting our j
Counting Room and Printing Building
with this manufactured on the lot, from
Pine Wood ( ‘ lightwood”) and Water,
by tiie Portable Gas Apparatus, patent
ed hist year by Messrs. Choate & Tyler.
The process is very simple and easy—
the retort is heated with wood fuel, oak
or pine, to a red heat, when a charge of
lightwood is inserted, and the process
of generating gas commences; and
when the gas is extricated, the charge. !
which lias been converted into charcoal,
is withdrawn, and another inserted :
and thus the process continues until
the requisite quantity of gas is made
The gas produces a beautiful, soft and
luminous light, certainly equal, and we
think, superior to Rosin Gas.”
This process of generating Gas, con-j
Unties that paper, commends itself for j
its simplicity and cheapness ; for where i
ever there is lightwood and water, you I
have all the nqpessary materials for if; !
production.
"We learn that it is the purpose of the
owners < f the Patent, to make an effort
in this city, to organise a company to
manufacture it on a more
rcale, which will afford those whfide
sire cheaper gas an opportunity to
plv themselves, provided the Wo'j ;s go
into operation.

“Oh, yes,” replied Tom Coker, J
never beam tell of the like before. Tile

I’ve jest got one of the best coon dogs
in all Illinois.
“ You say you never hear tell of the

an old veteran who hud been chewing
his tobacco in silence for the last half
hour. , “ Why you don’t know any

for their skins weren’t warth a durn
with us—that is, we could’nt get enough
for ’em to pay for the skiunin.
“ I recollect one day I went out a bee
huntin’. Wellarter I’d lumbered about
a good while, I got kinder tired, and so
1 leaned up again a big tree to rest. I
hadn’t much more'n leaned up afore

I’m snake bit, but a running wont do

seed it was no snake bite, for thar’s a
bloodblister pinched on me that is six
inches long.
“ 1 think sez I that rather gets me ?
What in the duce could it bin! Arter
thinkin about a while, I concluded to
go back, and look for the critter, jest
for the curiosity o'the thing. I went
to tiie tree and poked the weeds and
stuff all about; but darned the thing

'and so I gits to lookin’ at that. Dreck
ilylsees tiie split open about a half

,[ sees it open and shet, and open and shot,
and open and sliet, right along as regu

: Think, sez I, what inall creation can
I this mean ? I know’d I’d got pinched

was makin’it do it! At first I felt or
fully scared, and thought it mout be
[somethin’ dreadful; and then again I
| thought it mout’nt. Next thought
