Our Snhbnth Schools,
We have been kindly favored with
the reports of two of our Sabbath
Schools, which we append below. It!
will he seen that both are in a flourish
ing condition, and it must be a source
of great gratification to their numerous
teacheis, to feel, that in their laudable j
endeavors to inculcate the divine prin- f
eiples of Christianity into the youthful
mind, they have so large a field to work
in. Many are the men now living, of
mature age, and ornaments of the;
society in which they move, who can i
trace back theirfirst and lasting impres-j
sions to Sabbath Schools. And who can
tell the benefits tiiat may be derived by
hundreds of the little ones now in at
tendance on our Sabbath schools—and
how many of them, from the useful les
sons there taught, may yet rise to the
highest ranks of honor and distinction?
We have never had the pleasure of at
tending a Sabbath School in this city,
but from those who have, we learn, that
■ one of the most pleasing portions of the
exercises, is to listen to the congrega
ted voices of the hundreds of little ones,
in unision, and with surprising precis
ion, offering up praises in song to the
Most High. In both the schools men- j
tioned below, we understand more at
tention is being paid to this branch of j
their exercises, and that the children
make great proficiency ia singing and
keeping time.

It is not often that we have to record,'

Female Infant, not many hours old, in
a common basket, with some clothing,
was placed,we understand,on Thursday.;
on the steps of the Episcopal Orphan 1
Assy!tun in this city. If it will be any j
consolation to its stone hearted mother j
and her wicked abbettorc, we will in- j
form them that it was ivcuJM, and has
been duly cared for.
We hope the guilty parties to this
nefarious transaction may yet be brought j
to light, and receive the punishment
they so richly deserve, In such cases |

ion in this case, which was argued on
Monday last. The case involved the
right to. a lot of land in the city of Au
gusta. The exceptions to the decision (
of the Court below are numerous.

! L.R. Bigelow, of Massachusetts,,has
, published an essay on the Manufactur
:interests, designed to prove that
the corporation system prevalent in the
! New England States is chargeable wilii
most of the evils that have accrued in
fluctuations and depression.
We take the following summary of
results :
Irom 18*50 to 185 G Great Britain in
creased her consumption of cotton 50
per cent.; our increase during the
same time was only 04 per cent. For
three years from 1853 to 1850, the com
parison is still more striking : express
ed in value, the cotton manufactures
of Great Britain increased nearly S3B.

ary. During the same three years,also,
the amount of British exports of cotton
goods increased more than $27,000,000,
! while ours actually declined nearly $2,-’
I 000,000. Jhe British and French man
i nfactureg are greatly diversified among

a few leading articles. The prejudicial
results of this system are shown in tire
: fact that in France 250 per cent, is ad

the processes of manufacturers ; in Great
Britain 156 per cent.; and in the United

average double those of our corpora

ain not unfrequently rise from the hum
blest beginning, and accumulate enor
mous fortunes engaging in manufactur
, ingupon their own account. Mr, Bige
low gives several instances of this.—
1 Among these is that of a cotton manu
facturer «if Blackburn, who could only
write to sign his name. He began life
as a factory operative. In 1833, at 45
years of age, he undertook manufactur
ing in a small way, on his own account
and gradually extended his operations
until lie became the owner of several
large mills,and was reputed to be worth
half-a-uaillion of pounds sterling. Mr.
Titus Salt,by the manufacture of worst
ed gotids, lias, within 25 years, risen
from Wimble circumstances, until he
has become the owner -of an establish
ment near Bedford, comprising a floor
area for machinery of about twelve
acres ; and for the accommodation of

other system pre existed to interfere
with it. Men of wealth and talent and
! of the highest respcctab'rity have led
in its management; and so long as it
seemed successful, or at least, promised
success, it shared largely in the confi
dence and support of the community
