It affords us much pleasure to an- j nounce that Dr. Stevens has kindly con sented to lecture again to-night. His theme this evening will be “The Crusa ders in the Holy Land.” We hope that the Hall may be filled to its utmost capacity to-night, thus demonstrating that our citizens highly appreciate the efforts of the Young Men's Christian Association in furnishing them with rich intellectual repasts. Anniversary Address of Dr. Stevens. The Hall of the Young Men a Christian Association was filled to overflowing at an early hour on last evening. The wealth, fashion, beauty, and grace -of our city were there. After an earnest invocation by Eev. Tiios. H. Jordan, and the leading of the Scriptures in an impressive manner by Rev. J. R. Win so.v, the anniversary ode, written for | the occasion by a lady of this city (a per- i feet gem in itself) was effectively read ay Rev. L. M. Carter. The choir sang it with remarkable force and beauty ad ding a most attractive feature to the incidents of the evening. Whitson G. Johnson, Corresponding Secrectary pro ceeded to read his annual report of the transactions of the Association, which proved to be an interesting, able and 1 isterly document. From it we glean ■ following facts:—th.»t there are now 124 Active, 125 Associate, 23 Life, | and 2-1 Honorary members belonging to j the Association, making a total of 29C. j Receipts for the year 1858, $1279.85 —j Expenditures $912 81. Dr. Stevens was introduced to the, audience in a very appropriate manner ; by President Derry. Dr. Stevens has a very pleasant and interesting appear ance, and is a polished and elegant j speaker. His exordium was one of the ! most brilliant and ornate in its charac ter that we have ever listened to. He .poke of the beautiful thought sugges- j ted by the very name of the Associa- 1 tion ; of the power of a compact body ; j —of the nature of the principle uniting ' that body ; and of the strength and: power and glory of youth. The houi j being late he did not deliver the whole : of his lecture, which we deeply regret.' He handled his theme with ease and j success—guiding the historian’s pen into j poetic channels, gilding with the mighty , power of his Rhetoric the pages of the past. He gave a succint history} of the lives of the first Six Caesars, and an inter esting description of their “thrones and palaces.” He gave a vivid description of the deaths of Paul the Apostle and the Demon Nero. ETiP effort was listened to with marked attention, and we but re-echo the senti ment of all who heard it, when we pro nounce it chaste, dignified and excellent and a bright and valuable addition to the literary world. We cannot find the language, even if we had the time, j to express our admiration of Dr. Ste vens asa lecturer. The thanks of the whole community are pre-eminently due to this association for the pleasure experienced in hearing Dr. Stevens, and wc sincerely trust that the as- j soerntion will not grow “weary in well! loing” but will continue the course of; Lectures begun under circumstances so j auspicious. At a call .d meeting of the Vigilant j Fire Engine and Hose Company, held at their engine house this day, at seven ] and a half o'clock, p. in., the following I preamble and resolutions were unani - j mously adopted: Whereas, It becomes our painful du j ty to record the death of our brother fireman, John B. Simmons, wno was much esteemed and respected by his! fellow members; we, therefore, deem it right and proper to record a tribute I of respect to the memory of one who j will meet us here no more. Be it therefore— Resolved, That we deeply lament the death of John B. Simmons, whose con- j uection with us as an efficient member) of Vigilant Fire Engine and Hose Com pany had endeared him to all hearts, j we therefore truly and sadly feel that! this company has lost a most useful and ; exemplary member. Resolved, That as a mark of respect for the deceased, wo drape our engine! and apparatus in mourning for the space of thirty days, and that a blank page the minutes of this company be ded icated to his memory. Resolved, That we sincerely condole, with the relatives of the deceased in , their bereavement, and the Secretary of this meeting is hereby directed to fur nish them with a copy of those resolu - tions. Our cotton market has been quite dull during the week, I with light receipts. This falling off in receipts, results doubtless In part from the fact that the bulk of the crop has come to market, and in 1 part from the indisposition ol planters, who havo generally sold enough to meet their bills to foree cotton upon a dull market over the roads which have been in a condition to render its transportation difficult. It will be seen that the increase in receipts is still running in excess of the same time last ! year, and amounts to 799.685 bales, up to our I latest dates by mail. In winter dry goods thore 1 lias been quite a busy trade, and many of our merchants arc running off their stocks at re duced figures preparatory to the spring busi ness. No new features of importance in groce I ries or produce, and we refer to our table of j prices which is carefully revised to meet the least j variation in any leading articles : ! COTTON.—The receipts of the Week, under review, amount to 4,683 bales, and the sales for I the same time have not probably been over 3,000. At the close of our last review we quo ted as follows : Middling lDi— © Middling 11K0— Middling Fair to Fair 11 During the two first days of the week under review these prices were maintained, with a good demand, at which time the accounts by the North American depressed prices, and the mar ket has continued dull up to this morning, when the news by the Africa was received, since which time we have heard of no transactions, There is no disposition to submit to ary decline under present advices, and we look for a dull period until something new turns up to effect the market Tudsday 11th, 1 P. We do not alt'-r onr quotations, which are as they have been for several weeks. BRAN.—Our millers can supply a large quan tity, which is coming into use for iced, especially for milch cows./ It is worth 12}£c. ip bushel. RICE.—The supply is equal to the demand, at 3%©4 cents. BAGGING.—There is only a moderate demand for this article, with a tend< ncy to lower rates We quote 15® 15. cents. Light qualities a shade lower. ROPE.—There is no change in this article, with but little inquiry. We quote Hand mado Ken tucky cents, and Machine Bhi ©fleets. ALE AND CIDER —Good supply of l til arti cles on hand—the best Philadelphia Ale is selling at *lO si bbl.; Champagne Cider at *lO, and Ap ple Cider at *0.50. HARDWARE—There is no market in the South betier supp ied than Augusta, with all the arti cles in the line of Hardware. Our dealers are importers »r long experience and ample facilities. AGRICULTURAL IMPLEMENTS—Farmers and dealers will find large assortments of every arti cle in the whole range of plantation economy, at reasonable prices. We notice all the most ap proved patterns and late improvements, and ad vise those interested to try our market. IRON, &c.— Our market is well supplied with every description of Iron, and as largo supplies of English and Swedish arc arriving, our dealers are well prepared for the fall trade.
