Last night at the Mount Vernon Association assembly Mr. jiASSKrr volunteered to recite a beauti ful Poem to the memory of “Wasiung- TWi ' which was received with great en thusiasm. This offering of Mr. Mas cot should be remembered to-night. The Celebration Yestreriay The Military Companies of our city, consisting of the Oglethorpe Infantry, (apt. Jackson, Clinch Rifles, Capt. Plait, Irish Volunteers Capt. Hall, Montgomery Guards Capt. Wf.ems, Rich mond Hussars, Capt. Dearino, Washing t)n Artillery, Capt, Kirkpatrick, form ed in front of the City Hotel, at half just 10 o’clock, under the command of Colonel John B. Campbell, who was supported by a brilliant staff. They inarched through the principal streets of the city, occasionally firing a salute. They presented an imposing appear ance as they moved to the strains of martial music, thus doing honor to the 1 birth day of the Father of his country. ! We know that our military are compos-1 ed of patriotic and chivalrous men who ! are not mere holiday soldiers, but if their country calls for their services will not be found wanting. We do not know when we have wit nessed a more interesting scene than the presentation of the banner to the 1 Mechanics’ Independent Fire Company j yesterday evening. The sweet little' lady only eleven years of age we tiro I told, (we would not compliment her if; she vere ten years older,) who presented i the banner, after the first pallor caused i by the sight of the multitude had pas-| ged from her fair cheek, performed her part inimitably, and made her address with an emphasis and eloquence impos sible to many older persons of the sterner sex. The little beauty, as she stood listening to the reply of our friend > Blodget, with her intellectual brow up-' lifted,and surrounded by the firemen in their rough, hut appropriate dresses, j looked like a delicate flower planted | among sturdy oaks. Under ground Railroad Stopped l An extra from the Western Platte Ar- the 26th informs us of the re covery of -thirteen slaves in Kansas, at jthe time in charge of conductors ap pointed by the Abolitionists. Accords ing to this recount, which is verified by a letter from one of the most respecta ble gentlemen in Platte county several valuable slaves escaped from Platte oouuty a few days previous. They were . pursued, and this party found that they iiad crossed the Missouri river into Kau- I sas, iu charge of three whi[" conduc tors. Ihe party Luowed them to Law jroßOfi, expecting that the slaves would ’attempt to escape through Nebraska in jto lowa. During the night, it was as certained that leading Abolitionists had determined to collect the slaves togeth er and start them, twelve or thirteen in number, in two or tiiree wagons, for Holton, thence on the Lake route to lowa. The party in pursuit being ad vised of this, got ahead of the runa ways, and lay in wait for them. When the negroes and their rascally conduc tors reached the spot where they were, ! instant and unconditional surrender . was demanded. As they were taken by | surprise, this was done, and the conrs’e I of the negroes was immediately changed Ito Weston. They made the Rialto | Landing before the news got abroad, land all the slaves were safely lodged in jail. Great excitement followed, but for tunately no violence. Dr. Doyle and his son Charles, and a man named Clough, were the conductors in this railroad undertaking. They were taken before Justices Coleman and Heriot, and I in default of bail iu the sum of $5,000, j were committed to jail. Many persons ■ were tor hanging them at once, but wiser counsels prevailed, and they were sent to jail. Dr Doyle conducted his own case, and said that lie and his son were only hired to conduct the slaves to Holton, and that they had .been told that the negroes were free. 1 The negroes, after their capture, were to l>e taken to Platte City, if not previ ously rescued by the Abolitionists. A ; few years apprenticeship in the peniten tiary will probably convince Dr. Doyle |and his son Charley, that stealing or | running off negroes on the underground I railroad is not, after all so very trice.— The negroes arc owned by persons resi ding in Jackson, Clay and Platte coun- I ties.— Si.
