From wbat we have read of this exhibition, and the intense interest with which the subject is laden, we anticipate an unus ual treat, and doubt notit will be fully appreciated by our citizens. The Weather. It is the fashion among our co.tempo raries to indite paragraphs about the weather. We feel utterly incompetent to do justice to the subject, and there fore shall not try. Death of Urorgc U. Lumpkin. We regret to announce the death of Mr. Geokoe R. Lumpkin, a young man whose sterling integrity, modest deport ment and sincere piety, during his resi denceof two years in thisoity, had won the esteem of all bis acquaintances.— Mr. Lumpkin died of peritonitis this morning at 3 o’clock, aged twenty-six yeam. The writer of this has known Mr. Lumpkin for several years and has never known a-young man of more up right deportment or who gave greater promise of usefulness. We may be al lowed then to unite our regrets to those of his brethren of the Baptist Church and his companions of the Young Men's Christian Association. We can not call his fate an untimely one, for to such as he death can at no time come unexpected. Magistrate .Election* On Saturday last, at an election held in the 123 d District, G. M., Jesse K. Arrington, Esq., was elected a Justice of the Peace for that District. Slave Trade. From mature deliberation, our judge ment forces us to say, that the consid erations of humanity, expediency, our own interests, the interests of the civil - ized world, as well as those of the sav - age, sable skin Ethiopian, and prosperi ty of christaiuity itself, impel us to favor a revival of the trade. It is unnecessary to enter into a full discussion of these reasons at the present time. We are ever ready to act our part when this play is aunounced regularly. But we will mention only a few of our reasons. The negroes that are brought from Africa are not stolen, nor captured by our tra ders, nor are they kidnapped by the same, but are already slaves, or are pris oners of war—who, if not sold would be murdered, or eaten by their ebony skin countrymen,and not unfrequently both. And here we lay down the proposition, j that the shortest, and, as history has already proven, the only successful way to civilize and christianize Africa, is by means of the slave trade. That we of the South need more slaves, needs no argument. ADd if it is right to pur chase them in Richmond, it is right to purchase them in Africa. And that it is a move to benefit the poor, none but the hopelessly stupid, who have given the subject close unbiased and unpreju diced consideration, will doubt, lienee ortr position.— Calhoun Platform. The American Debut of the Elder Booth.— The Petersburg {Xa.) Express has some interesting recollections of the late Junius Brutus Booth and his Am erican debut. It says: In the season of 1823-’24, our inform ant was residing at “Osborne’s,” avil laSe on James River,' some fifteen miles from Richmond, and then a place of some importance as a shipping port.— One day, shortly after the arrival of a foreign vessel, he was supprised to see, lying under the piazza of the hotel, an .mmince pile of luggage, each article marked “J. B. Booth.” Wondering who Mr. Booth was, and what he could want with so much baggage, he entered the house and very speedily formed the acquaintance of the stranger, whom he met at the dinner table. He was an intellectual looking young Englishman, lree and affable in his man ners, and as our friend very soon discov ered, of very convivial disposition. He sojourned some two weeks at Osborne’s without giving any one about the place the slightest clue to his calling or future plans, when one day our informant was shown a bill of the “Iron Chest,” under lined for an early night the character of Sir Edward Mortimer by Mr. Booth, “his first appearance in America.” He took an early opportunity of show ing the bill to his new acquaintance, and ot asking him if he was the Mr. Booth alluded to. He very complacently an swered that he was, and invited our friend to accompany him to Richmond to witness his debut on the American stage. The invitation was accepted, and ac cordingly, on the night appointed they repaired to the theatre, where a large audience greeted the powerful acting of the young tragedian with the warmest manifestations of approval. He appear- < ed on the next occasion as Richard the Third, and completely confirmed the splendid promise of his first appearance by his unique and vigorous embodiment of that arduous character. Although playing occasionally in Richmond, he made Osborne his head quarters for many weeks afterwards. Destructive Fire at Memphis.- A fire broke out in Memphis on Tuesday night last, in the cellar of the Eagle & Enquirer printing office, and destroy ed half of a square on Main street, in cluding the Eagle & Enquirer, Ava lanche, Ledger, Christian Advocate and the Presbyterian Sefitinel printing offices also the printing house of Hutton & Clark, and the following stores : Gilkey f Warren, Jewelers : Saffrons & Strat ton, stove dealers ; W. H. Hunt, crock ery ; N. Stillman, millinery ; Heinrich -tiro., confectioners; Jos.Teuful, saloon, and several offices. Loss estimated at *150,000. All more or less injured.— lire fire is supposed to have been caused an incendiary. The railroad depot at Clinton, Miss., was set on fire a few days ago, and bare *> saved from destruction by the exer- > ions of the citizens. Fifteen bales of ’ cotton were destoyed.
