Winter suddenly returned upon us yesterday. The temperature fell during 12 hours, some 20 degress. Much ap prehension was felt that the fruit would be destroyed last night, but luckily the wind blew through the night and we cannot learn that it is injured. It is said that fruit is never killed in March, hut we are afraid that to night, without a change for the warmer, will prove the falsehood of the saying. The “ full mnon of April” is more dreaded by farmers and fruit growers than that of March, experience having taught them to look for a cold change at those times notwithstanding the idle theories of philosophers. Profits of Insurance. The Boston Herald, to show how im mensely piofitable is the Insurance business, gives the following as the re sult of the operations of the companies in that city. Os the Boston stock offices, the Amer ican divided $54,000 on a capital of $300,0C3, and had $171,000 reserved profits; the Boston paid a dividend of 10 per cent, with $124,584 reserved profits ; the Boylston paid 20 per cent dividend, with $283,743 reserved prof- : its; tho Fireman’ B 28 per cent divi- ! dend, with $175,PG9, reserved; the Manufacturers’, 30 per cent, witli $245,- 739 reserved; the Merchants’, 10 per cent; the National, 27 per cent; the Neptune, 20 per cent. Besides these, there are several foreign Insurance i Companies doing business in this Com- I monweath, whose dividends vary from j 20 to 30 per cent. Alarm of Fire.—Yesterday afternoon about two o’clock, some loose cotton in the warehouse of Messrs. Dillard, Powell & Co., was discovered to be on fire. The alarm was given, and our firemen, with their usual commendable alacrity, were soon on the spot, and extinguished the flames. The damage was but trifling. —Columbus Sun, 17 th. At a meeting of the proprietors of the Atlantic Telegraph Company this morn ing, the Eight Hon. J. Stuart Wortley, M. P., the chairman, stated that within the last hour he had received intelli gence of the success of the negotiations with the government, and that a guar antee will be given of 8 per cent, on £600,000 for 25 years. The guarantee will not be unconditional, as from the numerous applications the government have decided on giving none of that character. 'The precise stipulations have i not been definitely fixed. The cable | remains in exactly the same state as at | the previous meeting, the directors having no adequate funds for lifting and repairing it. A new act will be ob tained in order to raise the necessary capital. *«o» Shooting Affray. On Saturday afternoon last, the quiet of our streets was disturbed by the rapid discharges of a pistol. A difficulty had, from some cause, sprung up between the Deputy Marshal (Mr. D. A. McDonald) and Mr. John Yarborough, iu which McDonald iired at Yarborough several times with a revolver, one of the shots taking effect, and inflicting a painful, though not dangerous, flesh wound.— The parties were brought up before his honor the Intendant on Monday, and fined. —Athens Watchman. .*».«■ ... The English druggists are about a dopting a hexangular bottle, with deep timings, to put poisons in which are sold by retail. This is to prevent persons making mistakes by getting hold ot the wrong bottle. As an additional securi ty, the neck of the bottle is so contract ed that but a drop at a time can be poured out. The very deliberate and cautious action thus produced will, it is believed, deter any one from taking overdoses of medicine, while it is diffi cult to imagine a case in which a person could pour out and take the whole con tents of one of these bottles in mistake * or somethtng else. A Baroa 31 um-hausen at Pike's Peak. About the tallest specimen of lying that hasdately come under our observa tion, we copy from an exchange. It is as folio we: Young .gentlemen afflicted with the Pike's Peak fever, will be interested in the following statement from a reliable gentleman in the new El Dorado, of the manner of gathering gold in the dig gings. A man takes a frame work of heavy timbers, built like a stone boat, the bottom of which is composed of hea vy iron rasps. Th is frame work k hoist ed up to the dap of the Peak, and the inan gets on and slides down the side of the mountain. As he goes 6wiftly down, ,l “ e rasps oo -the bottom of the frame work scrape off the gold in immense shavings, which eurl up on to the ma chine, and by the dime the man gets to the bottom, neatly a ton of gold is fol lowing him.
