Frazer, took fire last night, 40 miles below this; city, and was completely destroyed.— , Billy Cullybanks, the negro Steward, was burned up, and Engineer Day and ' two black boat hands, whose names we could not learn, were drowned. Capt. < Frazer barely escaped from the boat.— 1 We have no time for particulars. Great Times in Nebraska. —An Edit or Cuwhided by a Lady. —A letter from Omaha, dated March 13th says : It appears that the editor of the “Ne braskiau” took occasion to allude to the return of one Wm. Young Brown,Esq., to our city, in a late issue of his paper. The wife of the censured man was sta tioned at the l’ost Office, to await the arrival of the editor, and as he was coming out of the office with his ex change papers in his hand, she thus ad dressed him : “Arc you Mr. It., editor of the Ne braskian ?” “I am, ma’am,’’ replied he. “I will teach you, then,’’ exclaimed the lady, “to libel my husband.” And suiting the action to the word,she forth with drew a cowhide and gave him a se vere trouncing. The editor thereupon seized the lady’s arm, and held her, when the brother in law and husband interfered and separa ted the infuriated combatants In the melee the face of the editor erably scratched, but fortunately there was n-> copious discharge of “claret.” This occurred at 12 o’clock, M. About ■3o’clock in the afternoon, the brother in Jaw of the lady who had chastised the editor happened to pags by where a large crowd were collectnd upon the sidewalk, talking abont the affair and the probable result of it. The editor was also in the crowd, and when he saw the gentleman approaching, he drew a ■revolver aud was about to shoot him, . when his opponent clinched hold of him and wrencheti the weapon out of his ; hand. These views aie the result of either ignorance or j < wanton malice. It is not our intention to expresss an j opinion as to the nature or cause of the event above alluded to, but we believe that no greater mistake could have been committed than in ascribing the death oi Mr. Key, and the circumstances from which it resulted, to any supposed loose ness in the morality of this community. Ihe temptations and dissipations inci dent to our peculiar position have long been harped upon by both the religious and secular press with an indiscrinina lion and injustice well calculated to aunoy and distress the subjects of these criticisips. It appears to be forgotten ! that \\ ashington society presents a re ally. objectionable aspect only when it receives accessions from sources inevita blv tending to render it impure and corrupt. New York and Philadelphia furnish | no small portion of the adulteration! 1 material. The plunderers of the pub lie treasury, and those who figure most extensively in the riots and scandals of the metropolis during the sittings of Congress, and especially during the long j session, are “importations” from those , principal two cities of the North. Du-' ring these seasons, the residents of Washington are really the underprust of society, being almost entirely thrust out by the wealthy highflyers from other sections ; yet if a faux-pat be committed, whether by New Yorker, Philadelphian, or Bostonian, we must bear the blame. , Weave preached to and lectured on our awful immorality by such saints as Greeley, the advocate of free love, so cialism, and every conceivable kind of : demoralizing ism. W ashington during the session of Congress, is as different from Washing- ; ton during the recess, as the youth who been brought up under proper influences differs from his former self when sur rounded by idle and vicious compan ions. We may safely aver that the standard of morality and virtue among ! residents of this city is as high and blameless as that of any other commu nity, not excepting New York, with its gilt edged piety; and Philadelphia, with its cold, white cravated sanctity. Washington States. The Rush to Pike's Peak—Two Tiiou sand a Day.—The rush to Pike’s Peak by the Hannibal and St. Joseph Rail- j road, continues to increase. On Friday ! last, 300 passengers, all for the gold re gion, arrived there on a single train, ' and on the day following 100 others ar-: rived. When we consider that the rush has only commenced, and will not reach its height till about the middle of April, we may form some approximate esti mate of the huge tide of population sur gingwestwardtospread itself over the bo som of the nascent State of Coloniia. The Hannibal and St. Joseph Road is only i one of the channels through which the living stream rushes. More than a thousand persons a day pass through St. 1 Louis, by the Missouri river steamers and the Pacific Railroad ; numbers of others cross the Mississippi at various! ferries, in wagons,and avoiding the cities i steer by the most direct roads for the western border of the State; while neafly all who start from the Southern States go up the Arkansas river through j Ft. Smith. It is fair to estimate the number of Pike's Peakers going west- '■ ward, through the several avenues of 1 travel, at 2,000 per diem. They come from every State in the Union, but chiefly from the west—from Illinois,ln diana, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, lowa and Kentucky, nearly every county, . town and hamlet in some of which States sends out a company of ten, twenty or thirty. Six months from this day tho unorganized region of Co lona, (the name proposed for the ! new territory,) will contain a pop ulation of 80,000 souls.
