JOBS BALANCED
BY NEW WORK
OPENING UIP
As the battle for jobs continues
between colored and white work
ers there is evidence of new irri
tations centering around labor un
jon hostilities and the dismissal of
Negro workers whose places have
been taken by whites. The political
jssue was brought to the front in
Warren. Ohio. when the employ
ment of six Negroes on a retaining
wall built by the city was objected
to by opponenis of the city adi
ministration who demanded that
voters faor “someboc¢ s who woild
give white folks some work” The
city administration was re-cleeted
however.
Labor pDisputes
The outstanding controversy with
organized !abor is in Boston where
Negro sirike-breakers have been
engaged on the docks as longshor
men. Incidentally. this has occa
persons looking for work of fa
character. In Lexington. Kj 38
portation of Negro me« hanics f1on
North Carolina who are working

Negro building tradesmen who
have been accustomed to work in
all branches of the industry thru
out the city. The organization ot
a local of Negio asphalt workers in
St. Paul, Minnesota. has caused 2
dispute cver the wproverbial ques
tion of the use of Negro workers
on the same jobs with white work
ers Consideration 13 being given
in Minncapolis 'o further unioni
zation of Negro laboer, the initiative
apparently coming from within the
group itself.
Whites Supp!an! Negroes
Contrary to their former custom
employvers who discharge Negroes
and turn their places over to winios
are now offering excuses for so
doing. Thus. in Austin. Texas..job
bing houses claimi that they find it
more profitable to use whites ‘

time consumed by Neczro workers

places on personal missions. Sanj

the unreliability of Negro workers |
Displacements have been reportedi
in Toledo. Ohio, where white ele-,
vator operators and stock guls arey
used in a department store Hacause
they can serve as clerks in an/
emergency. In Wilmington. Dele-;
ware. jobs formerly held by jani-,
tors and laborers nave been tuined|
over to whites. In Covington. Ky..|
similar displacement is noted lnf

New Jobs Opern |
These losses have been compe:)-i
gated for in whole or in part by
gains in public werks, building

are being used to give work to
unemployed men. Among the cities
reporting gains of this character
are Denver, Ft. Wayne, N(‘x\'m‘ki
Springfield 111, St Paul. Warren,
Ohic. and Hot Springs. Rvsumptlon‘

forms of throat troubles, Creomulsion con
tains, in addition to ercosote, other healing
elements which soothe and hel the in
focted membranes and stop the irritation
and inflammation, while the creosote goes
on to the stomach, is absorbed into the
