arrest.
Feeling in the Berlin section ran
high Tuesday afternoon when the
sheriff went to the jail to turn ov
er an insane woman to a taxi
driver, a crowd of more than 100
dashed into the jail yard under
Ihe impression that Jackson was
being moved from Moultrie. Sher
iff Beard Thursday said, however
that he did not believe that m
move would be made to storm the
jail.
Highway Blocked
Jackson is alleged to have phie, :
two legs across the highway over
.which the teacher drove from hei
'home in the Autreyville section t..
.Berlin in the hope of stopping th
'car. the young woman drove over
the first log before seeing the sec
•ond one. She applied the brakes.
When the car slowed down Jack
con tried to leap on the running
Kinard but the windows were up
• and the body of the car was slipp
- rv as result of the heavy dew and
Png. The driver of the car stepped
nn the accelerator, ran over the
second log and escaped. Upon
’caching Berlin she reported what
shad happened.
A posse of about 200 men was
muickly organized and search for
Jackson began. Sheriff Beard was
^notified and left immediately for
i he s-ene.
Before reaching Berlin he was
that a suspicious man bare
footed and bareheaded had been
eon walking dowm the highway
• > short time previously. Following
’his clue, he found Jackson, who.
be said, confessed to placing the
pegs across the highway near the
Dq] C o bridge. The teacher in giving
mr description of the would-be
•ailant had said that he was
nus shoes and hatless.
