New Mexico S hows Maryland How to Handle Criminals\
] DAILIES THERF
LAMBAST DIXIE
FOR STAGING
. LYNCHING
Albgquerque, New Mexico, Dec.,
18.—(By the Associated Nepro
Presss) - As a result of the con
viction “ere recently of ‘Thomas
Johnson, tried and convicted of
the murder of a white girl and sen
tenced to die February 12, two
newspapers have pointed to the
manner in which local officials
handled the case as being exem
pital bed and*lynched.
The editor of the New Mexico
State Tribune wrote in part:
“We commend the case of John
son to the attention of other local
ities in the United States, particu
larly to officials and citizens and
the great free state of Maryland’
‘Sherif Baca took no chances. He
placed his prisoner in the New
Mexico state penitentiary. District
Attorney Kenney and Santa Fe lo
cal officers went about the busi
ness ogf establishing guilt as if
they believed Johnson innocent
The district attorney built up a
mistake. An able attorney was
appointed to defend the prisoner.
He made a sincere fight for his
client. The jury decided.
“We are deeply impressed with
'thc smooth and effective way in
which Santa Fe-co authorities op
crated in the midst of a trying
situation,. The reason is that a law
abiding community had confidencs
that justice would be done.”
And in a similar strain wrote the
editor of the Albuuerque Journal
“An attorngy appointed by the
court able d(“flld(*d the Negro and
the defendant . received the due
protection and justice’ to which he
was entitled until a final determin
ation of his guilt or innocence.
“It is to the credit of the citizens
of Sania Fe that they have acted
so admirably : under the strain of
the fiené*rh crime. The little mur
mur of mob violence was met by
more sober judgment and quick
add complete justice has been fix
ed in the case.
“How much better it is that or
derly process of law prevailed
than to have had a reputation simi
lar to some other <tates for mob
violence. In Maryli ! for instan
ce there was a !y hing during
the time of the iria. in Santa Fe,
forn a8 less bruial crime than that
committed in this state.
Upon answering a radio call at
510 Capitol Avenue, Officer Doug
las Poole aund his companion
found three men attempting to
break into the I. W. Rogrrs Store
One of the meny, fled. The shrewd
officers **% dnd quietly waited fo
the return of the third whom they
suspected would returning as a
big truck had been backed up
near the entyance with a number
of burglar tobls in it. They claim
ed they believed the truck wa:
owned by the man who fled
Eventually the third man ap
peared and when ho aftterapted +
recover his truck, he was arrested
also. The first two bandts wore
Guy Ferguson, 408 Johnson Street
and Claude Smith, 387 .Johnezon
Street. The third man. the owner
of the truck, was J C Graham
497 Martin Street.

“LIMB-ILOOSENERS"” wil be in order for Saturday night too
The “Gladiators”, using the home of Mrs Leanna Smith, 28 Ashby
street, N. W., as their arena. will entertain a chosen few of Atlanta’s
younger elites. The fun will initiate around cight bells and will be
prolonged until the curfew tolls the parting knell at midnight. It
promises to be one of the swellest home affairs of this week's calen
dar, and by the fact itsclf, a fitting close to a week 0f average thrills.
