s Christmas For The Others
Christmas should be more than a day when gifts e
made to and received from friends on what is hoped by all
parties will be a doler for dollar basis,
' The grey wolves of hunger have stalked the land and
have claimed many a Negro as their vietims., Yuletide is a
period cf peace and geodwill to «ll when it should be the
wish of every human to <ce his fellowman happy. Many
have already given to zid those laid low by hard times: vet
there are few who cann: t spare a little more and there are
some who have as vel oivon nothing at all.
To these people, then, falls the duty of making oth
ers a little happier Christmas Day. Many needless gifts will
l-2 made to people who won't appreciate them: the money
invested in these could be used to fill & basket of tood or buy
some clothing for others of our race who do not know where
they shall get their next meal.
It is not difficult to find a host of people here whose
Christmas Day will dawn bleak and dark, who are without
even the barest necessities of life. It would take but little to
change these unfortunates’ outlook on life and that little
most of us could supply with only a very small cost.
What will you do? Will you make this a real Christ
mas for the many who need or will you spend it all to ap
pease your vanity by giving to friends who could afford to
do without ?

BY BEULAH MITCHELL HILL
| The Christmas Carol Concert
' given by students of Spelman
Morehouse Colleges at Sisters
Chapel. Spelman College, on Sun
day evening, was one of the high
lights of a season replete with
- music of the highest order. All ov
er: the couniry, in almost every
church and chapel in the land,
students and worshippers of the
infant Jesus had gathered on this
Sunday, to sing His praises and to
tell the story of the miraculous
birth. But at perhaps no other
chapel in the country was the uni
que, “different” program of Chris
tmas carols given, as the one at
Spelman Sunday night. Nor did 1t
lose an iota of reverence or spirit
ual beauty-—for where can one find
a greater depth of feeling ihan in
those marvelous carols wrung from
the sorrows of a down-trodden
peonle?
“D'world reel. but I git in glory,
Oh, when I git in glory, Glory be
to the new-born Baby.,” sang the
Negro fishermen as théy braved
the storms and dangers of the sea
in their nerilous calling. And who
can say that their voices were not
as sweet or their hearts as rever
ent as the Englishmen of the cen
turies gone by who sang in more
elocvent language of “The First
Noel."
How many mother-hearts the
world over will be singing, in tune
tothe bronzed, toil-scarred mother
of slavery days, WwWhe sang O
Mary., what you goin’ to name that
pretty little baby?!' And Mary's
answer, ‘Some call him one thing,
I think Tl ecall Him Jesus® Ir
reverent? Ah, no .just the opposite,
because the ery came from the pri
mitive heart of Motherhood-—that
the mother was perhaps rocking
her own dusky infant to sleep in a
hut on St. Helena Island, perhaps
only arguments the color and
beauty of the carol.
The old French "Bring a Torch
Jeanette, Isabelle,” the "14th cen
