NEW-TORK, April 19.
TO THE
EDITOR of the aurora.
Sir,
As bv the remonflrance and
petition which I have, among
others, fign *d ; the fenate are
rcquefted to reconfider their re
flations refpefting you, fo I
take the liberty of advifmg you,
to reconfider Rofs's bill, which
in your judgment appears to be
fraught with ftich
confequences. lam convinced
upon a fecond revifal of that
bill, you will fee it in a more fa
vourable 4ght s and think with
me, that it may produce very
falutary effefts upon the peace
and future happinefs ot thete
dates. 1 am lure this cannot
fail to be your opinion, when
you h?vc reflefted upon the
poflibility, nay, very great proba
bility, of two president's being
defied. One under the confu
tation, which exprcfsly fays,
that tad ** perfon having the
greateft number of votes that
lhaU be the prefident, if fuch
number Be a majority number
of cleflors of the whole appoint
ed.” The clofe of this ele6lion
of the comlitutional prefident
takes place in January, imme
diately after the prefident of the
fenate, in the prefence of the fe
nate and heufe of reprefenta
tives, has opened all the certifi
cates and counted the votes;
and yet, agieeable to the new
lav, another perfon may be ap
pointed by the conclave on the
frrfi of March following. So,
as 1 faid before, there is a great
probability of the United States
having two prefidents at the
fame time. Now, if you will
but confidcr what an effedl this
mull have on the peace and hap
pinds of the United States, you
ttHifl be forced to declare that
Ue plan is a chef-d'oeuvre in
politics, and that Rofs is as
much dderving of credit, in this
manoeuvre, as that arch-conjuror
Buonaparte, who touches a con
fiitution with his wand, crying
Preflo, to be gone,*' and in-
it difappears. The firfl
vantage that will refult from
lt% ' be 3 union of all par

both to pronounce their fpecches
at the fame time—they might
agree to read each a paragranh,
by f urns, as we fee fuccefsfullv
praftifed in fchools; and if
they were even printed in that
form, they might he as eafilv
undcrflood, and reconciled to
common fenfe, as'fame other
fpeeches written by an indivi
dual. Another advantage arifing
from this plan would be, that it
womd eafe the labors of a prefi
dent, which from the accumu
lation of offices in the interior
and of treaties with foreign
powers feem to be too much ;
nay, enough to turn a head of
more than ordinary capacity ;
but in the event of having two
prefiden f s they might divide
their labors; taking the duty
either by rotation, cr by making
an eaflcrn and a foufhern de
partment. The Yankees would
be pleafcd with {ohn Adams,
and the Fcnnfylvanians, Virgi
nians, See. would he contented
with Thomas [cjTcrfon. See
what an excellent invention to
put an end to party difputcs.
The reigns of [ohn and Thomas
would be remembered with as
much plcafurc as that of the two
Antonines who governed the
Roman world fo long with the
fame invariable fpirit of wifdom
and virtue. You may perhaps
objeft, that they would differ
about the divifion of the falary,
each cla ming the whole as his,
exdufivc right; but, this (on a
fecond reflection) mufl appear
a very trifling objeftion, and the
houfe of repmfentatives would
with as much cafe fett’e that
difpute as they vote a fum for
the furniture of his excellency.
What is 25,000 dollars additio
nal to unite contending faftions
and make democrats lovers of
order and good (flrong govern
ment ? If tones giumblcd they
might be punifhed by Thomas,
and if republicans winched they
would be curbed by John.
Herein is true wifdom and the
genuine art of governing. It
you fhould ever have the good
luck 1© be Tent to prifon under
the fedition aft, you would
have the fatisfaftion of feeing
little Brown and corporal Fcnno
in the fame apartments, and
thank heaver the bufincis of an
editor might be done as well,
if not better in jail than clle
wherc.
Be Tides, this plan of Rofs will
completely eafe the minds of
thofe men who are forever afraid
that the conflitution of this
country, fhould be ignominiouf
ly and bafely afitmilated to that
of England ; no fuch apprehen
fion could thus polfibly exift ;
it would rather approach in
bkenefs to that of France. Two
prefidents and one vire-prefident
would be a near refemblance to
Buonaparte’s conflitution with
bis ill 2d and gd confabs Ido
not make this companion in
o rder to pleale you, or any other
republican, bccaufe I know you
detefl the prefent French con
flitution, but much more the
means by which it was accom
plifiled ; I doit to (hew you that
we are by no means afraid of
making new cxpeiiments in the
fciencc of governments as Tome
democrats would have it fuppof
cd No—but we difpife the
very idea of being dilated to. or
even to receive hints fiom re
publicans, until that happy aera
(hall arrive; when, having two
prefiderts, Americans fhall be
but one people. Tohaftcnthat
period I would have you come
forward, like a true penitent on
whom the light of truth hath
flafhcd conviftion, and fall on
your marrow-bones before that
auguft aflfcmbly, whofc forefight
and wifdom thou canfl not pe
netrate, and cry out pecavi. I
have finned againfl heaven, and
in thy fight, henceforward I will
learn logic from the great Read,
and f:y, becaufe the republic of
Sparta had two kings, therefore
the American republic fhould
have two prefidents. The vir
tuous Adrian divided the impe
rial parple, with great advantage
betwixt the two Antonines, and
therefore Rofs fhall with equal
fuccefs divide the chair of (late
betwixt [ohn Adams and Tho
mas JefFerfon.
Indeed it is impoffihle to
force all the improvements that
might fpring out of this firnple
idea, that two heads are better
than one, even (heeps-heads;
we might even cxpe6l to fee
M‘Kean, and Rofs, joint gover
nors of Pennlylvania, don’t
fmile, it is not at all impofiible
in this age of revolution.—To
