Let me prefent to you the
delufions which have attended
pad clc&ions Formerly the
people of this country had lenfe
enough to originate and orga

intelligence and energies to keep
it in operation : now by force of
federal opiates they have juft ferfe
enough tochoofcthe wifeftand

choice is over, they fink into a
torpid (late, and thus remain for
two years, till the trump of a
new ele&ion wakes them to
new life and energy; but even
then they have been fo long
dormant that fometimes the
crew of a (hip mull be murder

men mu ft continue bona fide dead
till the cl e&ion is clofed—mira

bottom of meal tubs—the In

invade the frontiers—mighty
(hips with mighty men in them
muft be travelling the ocean on
mighty portentious and unac

political ftjigc muft be veiled
in darkoefsand myftery—clouds
tempefts and comfcations muft

of all this fecnery, Satan, with
his infernal hoft, muft be ad
vancing to take his long leafe
of the earth, and to make prin
ces and nobles of thofe infernal
oppofers of religion and good
government, whom all friends
of order arc called on to keep
out of place. All this, in mo

ing fyftems, thofe delifhtful
downy pillows, on which have
flept in ever la fling repofe the rights
of man ; the abandoned enemies
offplendid American courts, of
diplomatic legions, of foreign
tribute. As this vifion is pafting.
the people are called on to look
at thofe difinterefted men, who
regardlcfs of private intereft
have facrificed years to their fer
vice. and who wifh to ferve
them again only to (hew their
zeal to the death. The ele&ion
being fatisfaflorily clofed, the
people, like birds, whom they
rcpiefent, fly to their hiding
places to wait for a biennial re
furrc&ion.
Let no one imagine that I
would reprefent the clergy as
ailing out of their fphcrc in all
this fcencry; for it is not faid
unto them—“ go ye into all the
world, and preach politics unto
every creature. When men
oppofe ye. call them enemies of
God, and trample them under
your feet. Appoint fafts unto
the Lord, and when the people
are affemblcd, fay to them that
the Lord reigneth on the earth
in the midfl of men of power
and wealth ; that he delighteth
in the proud, even in thofe who
are lofty ; that he will exalt the
vain, and lay in the duft thofe
who arc humbled in his fight;
that the great men are gods ;
but that the little men are hke
the chaff, which he drircrh be
fore (he wind; that in the day
of his power he will fhinc migh
tily on thofe who are in power,
and that he will make the peo
ple under them like the hay
and the ftubble, and the (weep
ings of the threfhing floor."
And when thofe mighty men
(hall fay unto you, the church is
in danger;—then fhall ye cry
mightily unto the people, and
fay, “ the church is in danger,"
(cj and when my people hear
this, they fhall gird on each one
his armour, and ye fhall lead my
people, and ye fhall fay unto
them. “ though thefe mighty
men be blafphemers, and though
they are often Teen in the feat
where Satan dwellcth; yet for
righteoufnefs fake they believe
a lie. and though apparently the
difciplcs of Satan, will in the
end betray him," and the peo
ple fhall hear you and fhall fear
you, and they (ball fay unto
thofe mighty men, ** ye have

yet ye arc poor ; ye have moit- j

yet ye aie deftitutc : behold
