The FOURTH of MARCH
1801, will become as celebrat
ed in hiftory as the 4th of J uly,
1776, for the emancipation of
the American States from Bri
tilh influence and tyranny. The
election of a republican Prcfi
dent is anew Declaration of In
dependence, as important in its
conftquences as that of 1776,
and of much more difficult at
chievement.
Our former conteft with En
gland w r as merely a matter of
ftrength ; the conteft which has
juft been clofed, was a war of
intereft, vice and corruption,
againft principle, virtue, and
patriotifm ; our country became
filled with foreign fpies, and
domeftic traitors, who were on
the eve ol llib verting our con
ftitution and liberty ; but the ir
refiftable voice of a free people
has banifhed them forever, and
declared that the 4th of March,
1801, fhall become the birth
day of our regenerated Indepen
dence and Liberty.
SAVANNAH, Jan. 13.
On the Bth inft. a refpedla
hle number of republicans con
vened at Gunn’s tavern to par
take of a fete given to govern
or fackfon.
This occafion afforded ano
ther opportunity to this clafs of
citizens, to indicate the eftima
tion in which they held the
fervices and adminiftration of
our firft magiftrate, and it
muft be a means of {Emulating
the exertions of future public
fervants to know, that in defer
ring well of the republic, they
ultimately obtain a reward infi
nately fuperior to the baubles of
corrupted regulations—-the ap
probation and plaudits of a free
and enlightened people. A
Camber of patriotic toafts were
drank, fuitable to the occafion,
and tlie bufinefs of the day'con
ducled with the utmoft harmo
ny and good order.
