MIRTH IV MISERY. A Utter from the celebrated George Alexander Stephens, anther of the Leifure on Heads, idle. &c. io Doctor Miller oj Done af ter. Tar mouth Jail , June, ’99. Dear Sir, WHEN I parted from yon at : oncaflcr, I imagined, long before this, to have met with Tome oddities worth acquainting you with It is grown a fashi on of late, to write lives. I have now, and for a long time have had, leifure enough to write mine, but want of mate rials for the latter part of it; for my exigence cannot be pro perly called living, but what the painters call fill life; hav ing fince February the 13th, been confined in the town jail for a 1 onion debt—As a hunt ed deer is always fhunned by the happier herd, lb am I de ferred by the company, my fnare taken off, and no fupport left me, favc what my wife can fp arc me out of hers. “ Oef-rird at tny u nu ft need, l>v >ofem?f rmcr bounty fed ff With an economy, which till now I was a Granger to, I have made fhife hitherto to victual my little garrifon ; but then it has been with the aid of my good friends&alllcs*- - my clothes. This week’s eating fmifhes my jail v aiftcoat, and next I mull atone for my errors on bread oc water. 1 he milloclcs had fo many V v». ns to furnilh his table ; and a whole city bore the charge of his meals. In fome refpefts I am like him, for I am furnifhed by the labours of a multitude. A v. ig has fed me two days ; the trimmings of a waiflcoat as long , a pair of velvet breeches paid my walker-woman, and a ruffled fiiirt has found me in (ha ving ; my coats I (wallowed by dn'ire^—the fleeves I break f ted on for weeks—the body, fkh * , Nc. ferved me for din nr v » months j my filk flock - i .ave paid my lodgings, and t pair of new pumps have c ' led me to fmoke feveral pipe j. It is increditable how r v •. tite (barometer like) r i. proportion as my necef- L ns make their terrible ad va , ccs. I here could fay fome thing droll about a flomach, but it is ill jelling with edge tool 1 am fure that’s the fflarpefl thing about me. You may think I have no fenfe of mv condition, that v Kile I am thus wretched, Ifh id offer at ridicule ; but, hi, people conrtituted like me, wn > a lilproportionatc levity of ;p'.nc.> are always mod merry v her: moll miferablc, and quick en like the eyes of the confum tive, which are always brighteft the nearer a patient approaches to diflblution. However, fir, to fhew that I am not entirely 101 l to all recolledlion, I think myfelf poor enough to want a fax- r, and humble enough to a;k ir I fere, fir, I might make an encomium on your good na ture and humanity, &c. but I fh m! not pay fo bed a compli ment to your under(landing, as to ei leavour by a parade of phralc:, to win it over to my iftterefl. tt you could, any night at a concert, make afmall collection for me, it might be a means of obtaining my liber ty ; and you well know, fir, the fird people of rank abroad, will perform the mofl friendly offices for the Tick; be not therefore offended ac thcrequeft of a poor (though adcfervcdly) punifhed debtor. G. A. S. RALEIGH, (n. c.) Dec. 23. The Wilmington Gazette of Dec. 18, has the following impor tant paragraph. “ We hear that an Engl i ill fliip from Liverpool, arrived at the Fort on Tuefday lafl, and brings the important news of a PEACE IN EUROPE. A gentleman who was on board the fhip ycflerdav, arrived in town to-day, and fays, that the captain informed him, that on the paflage lie was boarded by a French 74 gun fhip, which fuf ferred him to proceed on the voyage, the captain informing him at the fame time, that a PEACE had been concluded at the Congrefs of Luneville.” ■mi mtmwmmmm* i ■■■—wmi 1 ****** mm, ■ ■■» >wi * mmiII—<TMIWWWI H !!■ 'tt NATIONAL MA GAZINE. Publijhed at the Seat of the Nati onal G overnment. THE Patrons of this work are efpeClfully informed, that it will during the prefent fefflon of Congrefs (and longer, if the experiments meets their ap probation) be Idiied weekly, in sections, confining of fixteen pages; fix sections to com pofe a number of ninety-fix pages. The reafons for this innovati on are numerous; amongfl o thers, the difficulty of tranfmit ting them to fubferibers was ex ceedingly great; too cumberous for admifflon into the mail, they were neceflarily committed to the precarious modes of wag gons and water conveyance— this has been a conflant fource of difappointment and vexati on, as well to fubferibers, as to myfelf. In its prefent fhape thofe difficulties will be avoid ed ; they will be regularly fenr in the mail, and the pofiage cannot exceed a dollar a year, to the moll diftanr fubfenber. The anxiety which refls upon the mind of every politican, to obtain corrcCl and early details of the proceedings of Congrefs, could not be giatified by a pub lication ifiued but twice in a quarter of a year ; for their ac commodation, and my own in terefl, I have adopted the pre fent plan, prefuming that its ufefulnefs will enfure it the ap probation of all the fubferibers. The fubferibers are requell - j ed to call at the Poft Office ncar i ell to their refpe&ive places of refidence, and receive the Sec tions, as they will be addrefled to them, regularly at lead once a week.
