RELIGIOUS PREJUDICES.
From Park's “ TravelsA
a One night having folicited
m vain for water at the Moorilh
ramp, and being quite feverifh,
I refolved to try my fortune at
the wells which were about half
a mile from the camp. Accord -
cordingly I fet out about mid
night, and being guided by the
lowing of cattle, I foon arrived
at the place , where I fbund the
Moors very bufy in drawing
water, I requefted pcrmillion to
drink, but was driven away with
Outrageous abide.
Palling, however, from one
mil to another, I Came at lail to
cne, where there were only an
old man and two boys. I made
she fame requeft to this man,
2nd he immediately drew me
up a bucket of water ; but as I
was about to take hold of it, he
recollected I was a Chriftian, and
fearing that this bucket might
be polluted by my lips, he dalli
ed the water into the trough,
and told me to drink from
fhence. Though the trough,
(continues Mr. Park) was none
of the largeft, and three cows
were already drinking in it, Ire-
Jolved to come in for my fliare ;
and kneeling down, I thruft
my head between two cows and
drank with great pleafure, until
the water was nearly exhaufted,
and the cows began to contend
with each other for the lalt
mouthful.”
At another time, Mr. Park,
calling at a ftiepherd’s tent,
where iome food was given him,
iemarked the following feene,
“ Whilft 1 was eating, (fays the
traveller) the children kept their
eyes upon me ; no fooner did
the fhepherd pronounce the
name of Nazarine [chriftian]
than they began to cry, and
their mother crept flowly to
wards the door, out of which fhe
fprang like a grey-hound, and
was inftantly followed by her
children; io frightened were
they at the very name of a chrif
tian, that ik) entreaties could in
duce them to approach the tent.”
Time, Bufmefsy and Recreation.
For every thing you buy or
ftll/let oj hire, make an exact
bargain at once ; and be not put
of]' to an hereafter by one that
fays to you, *• we fhar/t difagree
about trifles/
Rather pay wages to a krvant,
than accept the offered help of
occafional attendants —fuch are
never paid.
] Te that follows his recreation
when he fhould be minding his
bufinelS, is likely in a little time
to have nb bufmefs to follow.
It is the great art philpfophy
oflifetomake the beft of the
prefenr, whether it be good or
bad ; and to bear the one with
refignution and patience, and en
joy the other with thankfulncfs
and moderation.
How unthinking muft thofe
unhappy perfons be, who make
it a common excufe for idle and
pernicious amufement, that they
do it to kill time.
After you have ufed faithful
diligence in your lawful calling,
perplex not your thoughts about
the iffue and fuccefs of your en
deavors, but labour to compofe
your mind in all conditions of
life, to a quiet and Ready depen
dence ©n God’s Providence, be
ing anxiouOy careful for nothing.
Diligence alone is a fair for
tune, and induftry a good eftate.
Idlenefs doth walle a man as in
fen fibly as induftry doth improve
him: You maybe a younger
brother for your own fortune,
but induftry will make you an
heir.
Leifure, without learning is
death, and idlenefs the grave of
a living man.
Rife early to your buftnefs—
learn good things, and oblige
good men \ thefe are three
things you never fhall repent of.
Time is the moil precious,
and yet the moft brittle jewel
we have : it is what every man
bids largely for, when he wants
it, but fquanders it away moft
laviOily when he has it.
The bow that is always bent,
will fuffer a great abatement in
the ftrength of it; and fo the
mind of man will be too much
fubdued, and humbled, and wea
ried, fhould it be always intent
upon the cares and bufmefs of
life, without the allowance of
fomething whereby it may di
vert and recreate itfelf. But,
then, as no manchoofes to make
a meal of Tweet meats, fo we
muft take care, that we be not
exceftive and immoderate in the
purfuit of thofe plealures we
have made choice of.
