Reflections in a Grave
Y a R D.
Here is the laft Hage of life’s
journey : lie re is the collecting
rendezvous of fuffering mortals j
here is a fafe fctreat from the
barbed fhafts of malice, from
pointed perils and from mifery’s
rod. Here, after noble and ig
noble views, after every ardent
wilh, after purfuing every Bat
tering object, we find the iflue
of them ail. Here from fervile
bondage, and oppreffion’s iron
Land, reHs the wretched negro,
whom chance has made a Have :
here he forgets his galling Hate,
and with iris lordly tyrant deeps
equally accommodated. Here
the oppreHbr and the injured
moulder together. Here fleep
the meanly faving and the rio
tous profufe. Here, poHrate
in duH, lay the degrading relibts
of fuaring mortals ! Remember
then the tranfient vifion of ter
reflial greatnefs, and a cl fo as to

from the Examiner, pvhlijhed in

The Grand Jury for the Coun
ty of Warren, in the State of
Georgia, have, as the readers of
ij 17
the Examiner know, prefented
the appointment of Thomas
Gibbons, as diHriCt Judge, un
der the new patronage judiciary
Law, as a grievance.
This man was a Tory , and no
fych character ought ever to be
permitted to hold an office under
our government. But this tory,
betrayed a total deHitution of
love of country : he left Ame
rica during the revolution ; his
eilate was confilcated ; and when
he returned, he boaHed that he
would make it up out of the
people. . All this they faw, and
bore with a liberality known onl/
in the American character. In
any other country, a man going
over to the enemy would have
been hanged : it would have
been a death juH as ignominious
as his traitorous condudl. But
under the adminiftration of Mr.
Adams this monarchiH isfclcdled
-as a judge : he is to decide be
tween the citizens of Georgia,
and the fubjebls of the king of
Tngland for whom he has alrea
dy evinced the moH decided
preference. He is to judge per
haps between men who are now
living and whom it was once his
opinion deferved death as rebels,
and the loyal, virtuous, faithful
murderers of our forefathers,
with whom he abled in concert.
I cannot fuppofe, after fuch
repeated evidence of a 1 pint
hollile to the principles of our
government in every abl of Mr.
the union regrets his retirement.
Old, and evidently deluded ; the
dupe of one half of the federal
ly, the mortification of the
other, and the contempt of the
wings ! This was the charter
of our chief magiftratc, at a
enfis which caked ror energy of
mind, and national refpedl and
confidence. 1 low America wea
thered the Honh with Inch a
pilot, I know not, uniels we
prelume that the virtue of the
people counterbalanced every
difficulty. They have been a
check upon the wicked, and have *
refuted every argument agaihft
reprdemative democracy."

It it were true, as it cC? ere pre
tended by fonts, that I have ever
been inimical to the people ot
the United States, or that I Hill
bear malice towards them, I
fhoulcl certainly find muchcaufe
to exult in their predent fituation,
while 1 behold thofe haughty and
infolent patriots of ’76, who were
proud toacquiefce in the whole
feme and legitimate laws enabled
by the nobility and gentry of
their parent country for the pro
tection of thefe colonies, kicked
out of office! and everywhere
infuked and defpifed by the very
meancH of our mlferable outcaHs
from the gaols and dung-hills of
Europe. If I was thus prone to
malice I fhould fay, let Burke ,
Dallas , Callender, Gallatin, Du
ane, arid a fwarm of other fagged
rafcals that we can well (pare,
tike the reigns of the American
car into their own hands and
.drive triumphantly over the ftiff
necks of John Adams, Hamil
ton, Madifon, Pinckney and the
whole gang of republican parri
cides till their parent country be
amply revenged. Indeed if 1
may judge by their daily newf
papers from America, this work
is going on charmingly, and even
PrcTidcnt Jefferfon , is only in the
ticklifh fituation of the ci-devant
Orleans. 1 have not yet cried
Ca lrd, but as a Chriflian 1 be
lieve, as the Dey of Algiers late
ly told the American captain,
that God is just.
From the Iludfon Gazette,
MR. STODDARD,
I fubjoin an extrabl from the
ancient i( Blue Laws" of Con
necticut—they certainly will be
confidered as a curiofity by many,
and may ferve as a model for
fome of our reforming lawgivers;
from which to make a code that
will effie&ually fupprefs vice and
immorality.
