• under con ft :ous gull:-, \ reduced to the laft fhifts of f.’illhood and evafion. After j veral falfe and frivolous re marks, he feems to humbly con f,le hirafelf with the pitiful gra tincation of calling names in the •v ulgar language of a querulous old woman —Were we difpofed (which is not the cafe) to adopt his fcumlous fbile, we could be flow on him a variety of epi thets, each of which might be generally thought very appro priate, fuch as mifcreant, ralcal, fac, &c. —But in our opinion bis own proper appellation of Wm. j. Hobby, is the moll infamous and reproachful term that we can life* and one well calculated in Georgia to exprefs any degree of political bafenefs. —For to call him fcoundrel, would be attaching to him a fig rificance, a diftindlion and con fftency of character, to which he cannot even afpire from the fuperlative profligacy and de pravity of his principles.— Upon a few occafions when a direft opportunity offered to expedite the papers to Augufta, they have been fent by private 'conveyance, and this was done merely to enfurc their delivery. Upon ail other occafions, they have been fent duly by the mail, as the proffered certificate of Mr. James Bozeman, pofl-mafter at Louifville, would fully teftify.— Altho* we have given this further vv explanation and proofto guard any wilufpcfting mind, againft W. J. Hobby's infiduous falfehoods, bafely calculated to injure us with our Sitbfcribers ; we are convinced that the well known principles upon which certain poft-mafters have long a deed towards Republican Editors, throughout the United States, is Efficiently underffood by every intelligent reader, as to have rendered ir unneccffary. With regard to his allufion to A Jury of the Comity deciding on wy libellous matter —If he ex pects by this fetch to produce an abandonment of our duty to the public in expofing delin quents, to impofe filence by intimidating us with the dread of a malicious, vexatious proj ection, he is moft egregioufly miftaken ; the experiment has already been made by fome of his partizans in this County, and failed ; having met with the juft contempt which it with its au thors merited from a well in formed independent jury, who difdained as Inch men ever will, to minifter to the malice of any degraded fpeculating faction. departed this life, on Mon day morning laft, in the 19th year of her age, Mrs. Eliza beth Lem lb, wife of Mr. Da- Ud Lernle, of this place. One of the numerous advanta ges which the printers of repub lican newfpapers flattered them jlveswith the hope of obtaining, by a change of the executive, an alteration in the poft rjfice department. At prefent, T ’‘is is almofl entirely in the V a ndsof federal partizans, many rj A’hom arc themfelves printers, and it i s eafier to feel than to de * -dbe the fuperiority which, in various rdpcdls, this arrange ment gives to federal editors, in tb.e promptitude of their public intelligence, in the collection of fublcribers, in their correfpon dence with their readers, Ac. &c. There is not a poll-office in Virginia, but what is ftuck round with propofols for inch papers as the Pert Folk, Gazette of the United Stater, IPdfbhmtcn Federal if, is <\ and the poft-mal ters pay greater attention to ob raining lublcnbers than to the duties of their c.Tu e. No fuch favour is fhewn to republican papers, and of courfe the princi ple of “equal and exact juftice to all parties,’' is not properly attended to. Theft* remarks are not point ed atany individual. The griev- | ance is general, and a republican j executive will think it his duty to reform ir. Virginia Pager. In a weftern paper, a printer announces to his readers the marriage of a “ Mr. John Shore, to Mils Polly Peafe.” This couple, in a laudable fpirit of cuiinaty economy, it feems, are for trying a mcls of pork and P^s. A father wilhed to diiTuade liis daughter from all thoughts of matrimony —“ She who mar ries does well, (lays he) but Ihe who marries not, does better.” “ My father,” Ihe anfwered, very meekly, “ i am content to do well: let her do better who can.” One of the laft Liverpool pa pers contains an advertdement, by authority of the church war dens and overfeers of the poor, giving a clefcription of no Ids than twenty-nine hufbands who have run-away from their w ives, and left their families chargeable on the parifh. In this lift tliere are fix tailors and live fhoema kers. .. In the defenption of the run-aways there is only one of a ruddy complexion, and he is a hlackjmth. The parifh offers a guinea for apprehending any of them, but none of the wives offer a penny. Baltimore Pager. At an election for reprefenta tive to Congrefs, from Kentuc ky, held at Lexington, the votes given were, for John Fowler 648, for William Garrard 39, for Philip Thomas 2ft.
