Extract of a Utter from a gentle
r.ian in the Natchez , to his
friend in IFajhingtcn.
“ The increafe of trade down
this river, furprifes old fettlers—
thtf number of boats is, I believe,
trebled, even fmee laft year.
More boats have like wife been
loll; but that is chiefly owing
n whlfky, as I have been told ;
yet, as far as could judge, I am
aflonifhed fo few accidents have
happened. Boats are ill found
and left, often to the conduct of
men not well acquainted with
great'waters. Two things are
particularly eftential to fafety
a;ul difpatch, attention to the
currents of the river, and care
fully to avoid faftening to high
banks. Where willows grow or
young cotton trees, there is no
danger, but high banks arc very
apt to fail in with their growth
ot trees. Several boats and
people have .thus been loft.
Two or three boats fhould de
feend together. They fhould
not let Indians board them, at
kail if they do, they fhould give
them no liquor.
<c Some narrow efcapes have
been made; and if not guarded
againft, mifehiefs muft be ex
pected. Something like bene
volence has written this, and
wiflies that thefe hints fhould be
improved into legible form and
pubhfhed, as nobody’s. It is
Laid, nobody does much mifehief,
but thus he may do fome good.
I have not health to write as I
intended.
u I have been told near
100,000 barrels of flour hive
been floated down this year, and
the greater part carried to New-
Orle ans. One brig built near
•i Ktfburg is gone to fea, and two
more arc building. This will
be a great country. But fome
remarks on this I fliall endeavor
t 0 make correctly foon for pub
lication.”

The following account of the
various publications in the world

u There is but one paper in
Portugal, and that only ap
pears three times a week it is (
Gnduded by a German, who I
r, Hcs care to exclude only the j
breach news, while he admits j
thole of Madrid, Hamburg and I
London. In China there is on
'•’ one Gazette a week, but is a
mo volume ; it contains no
Meign- news, but merely the
“dlory of the events in the
c rmntry. There is no joking in
f u about truth, for in x 7-26, one
m tiie writers having thought

ftance, time fome accounts

was thought improper to make

ber was immediately fiipprefled,
ami the people were forbid
to (peak of it in future. There
is a paper pubhfhed in the Ter
fi.in language at Delhi, the capi
tal or the Great Mogul. Some
curious perfons have preferved
copies of the paper of the Bth
February 179], which is five
French ells in length. The
intelligence contained in it is
of the moft abfurd nature, fuch
as £< th.at the men,who had the
