We feel no fmall degree of
Gtisfaffion inaffuring the public,
the. mail difpatched for the
northward the cd irft. art! fup
pofed to be robbed, is found
without any lols, and forwarded
by the poffmafter; the inten
tion of the villains who took it
Irom the pod-rider, is not eafi
ly fathomed. It was cut open,
thoroughly fearchcd, left in the
woods within four miles of town
and nothing taken from it, ex
cept a fmall ofnaburgh bag ufed
for the Pcterlburgh, (V.) let
ters.
The poff-maffer, who is very
correct in all his ffatements, has
declared to the public, upon the
drifted examination, nothing is
taken from it, except as above
mentioned. 1 his accident brings
to our recollection the ffiameful
conduCt which has been tolerat
ed m the poll-office department,
throughout the United States.
A poll-matter in Maryland lias
more than once lent the north
ward mail ro the fourhward* and
the fouthward mail to the north
ward. In Virginia it has been
common to burn, publicly in the
Hreets, large packages of repub
lican newspapers; and every
merchant of Charleffon can bear
teftimony to the frequent fai
lures which occur in Carolina.
Indeed, w'ere we to publiffi the
many complaints made to us
refpefting failures of polls, we
ffiould foon exhauft the patience
of our readers.
It is but j office to curfelves to
affure thofe gentlemen, who re
ceive their packages from the
pod-office at King’s-Tree, that
they are enclofed in ffrong pa
per, bought for the exprefspur
pofe, and punftually lodged in
the pod-office. Nor have we
the imallcd fufpicion, that the
fault originates at the Charledon
office ; we have fufffeient rea
fon to believe to the contrary.
There are but two pod-offices
between this and King’s Tree,
our friends therefore, now know,
where the fault lies. The
dally complaint through the
United States, mauger the im
menfe profit the pod-office (Ha
blifhment yields to the coffers
of the general government, call
loudly for prompt and deciffve
redrefs—lt is not for us to point
out where the fault begins, but
to date that it exids.
