THOS. JEFFERSON. NT —— —. ~ .T ~T 7" ‘"7 LOUISVILL E, WEDNESDAY) December 30, 18~1. sypj* This Gazette will in su ture be ptihlijhed every WedneJ day, in order to give admijjicn to the latejl Intelligence , brought by the Northern Mail. sy.trall os a letter srom a gentle pian in St. Domingo , to his correspendent in Baltimore , doled Cape Francois , Ocider 1, 1801. <c On the 23d, about i o’- clock in the morning, this city was disturbed by the siring os os sume muskets; however, the r.oisc ceasmg immediately, the alarm was considered as trising by the greatest part os the citi zens, although thosein the vici nity os the tiring, partially ac quainted with the cause, labored under the greatest apprehensions, and well were they sounded, sor a diabolical plot was laid sor the extermination os all the white people during the course os that night. Thanks to Heaven not a person in the city has susser ed, and we are lest to express cur gratitude and admiration os the gallantry and consummate prudence os general Christophc, who, well aware os the impend ing danger, exposed his own lise to sive ours-—accompanied with a handsul os men, he seizedwith his own hand, three os the chies ronspirators, and sorced them to disclose the leading parts os the plot.—Had the general ordered * cJ the drums to beat to arms m the night, it is generally supposed not a white person would have ken daylight—it would have been the expected signal sor murder. The 24th in the morning, we were apprized that the cultivators in the disser ent parishes had risen in arms, and were murdering ail the whites without diserimination os sex or age—men os 80 years os age have met with the same sate as children 2 months old. d he troops os the line, as well as .the national guard, and a corps os dragoons were called to arms, O ... a molt judicious diserimination observed in their respestive dispositions, thole tuspested were Marched out against the insur gents—the most trusty kept sor tlie guard os the city. General Ehnssophe, at the head os the army, advanced in the country, and soon sound some parties os *ke iniurgents who sled besore kim, but continued their cruel ties as they retreated. u The number os whites killed is not exastly know r n, moderate people make it about ' 2 N- The parishes os Lacul, Port IVlargotj Grand Bovcan, Doudon, and Marine- Jade* have had the most victims, the iniurgents ossered but little resistance—-their chies, Joseph Flaville, being so imprudent as to ansvver some advances os <v neral Christophc, put himsels m his power and is now in jail—a great number os his accomplices have already sussered in disser ent parts the punishment due to their crimes, and we expest every instant severe justice here. The governor-general having received insormation at Port au-Prince os the 11011 b les, marc i - ed with a corps os 5,000 men, whiiss gen. Moyle, who was al io ablcnt Item the city, march ed srom Montchrist with a body (st 2,000 men, and cutoss their retreat towards the ci-devant Spanish part —most os the troops belonging to this city have re turned, and ssnee yesserday we have again began buliness. Wc are insormed the insurgents have mostly' returned to their respec tive plantations, and considence begins to revive, but 1 doubt much whether it will ever reach the height it had obtained. “ The design os the insur restion is pretty accurately ob tained—the destrustion os the present governor—a new orga nization, sounded on plunder and divisson os lands, and the annihilation os the whites. s c I have thought proper to give you as sull an account os this transastion as time would permit me, that you may com municate it to your sriends— the evil has been great, but no doubt will be represented still greater. Is I may judge srom Ihe terror which has prevailed here, srom the unbounded sus picions which have been created and the vague reports in circu lation.” ALEXANDRIA, Ncv. 28. Important!—ls True. Arrived this morning schoo ner Harriott, Weeb, Antigua, 28 days. Captain Weeb in sorms, that in the river he spokc the schooner Neptune, os this port, 38 days ssom Lilbon, the captain os which insormed him, that Spain had actually declared war against the United States.
