I'ccupped out as Ariftldes fays,

commander ; but it has to ufe
an analogous fimilie been vo
mited forth- from the bench
, — of joffice I would fay ■,
of which foine notice was taken.
I wiHi when Anflides treats of
party again, he would try to be
a little more ferious, and de
feending from his tropes and
figures to a plain idle, adapted
t > common fenfe—tell us whe
ther he reeky makes no diftinc
tion between the nccdTary," juft
and uniform general efforts of
the people to guard and preferve
their rights, and the Snifter en
ds ivors of a reftlef, difcoment
ed junto, to invade and deftroy
them. We fee both parties
equally a£iive at prefect. If
we look into Hiftorv, we find
precedents abundant; and it is
more than probable it ever will
be the cafe. Mow, I wifh to
know if he indiscriminately con
demns them both, as aftuated
by a fpirit of party as reprehen
fiblc in one as the other.
If fuch a conclufion fhould
be eftablifhed—by what moral
pri no pie fhrali we be governed
in our aflions and elections ?
Bv what criterion fhail we judge
between right and wrong ? If
fo, then our excellent Preftdent,
and to come nearer home, our
Governor was put into office
by this vile fpiric of party f for
it is well known very great ex
ertions were made againft him,
and it required all the efforts
thofe whom I judged to be the
real friends of Georgia to elefc
him ; then thofe who fopported
his intereff are no more entitled
to his individual regard, or the
thanks of their country, than
thofe who violently and inde
cently oppofed him—bccaule
party fpirit did it. For my
part, 1 chink at prefent differ
ently : I confider one as the
will of the people, and with me
vox populi eft vox Dei —-the other
the voice of a faTion, a junto,
oppofed to the public good,
from whom alone party fpirit
originates ; and to whom alone
it can properly be aferibed.
In one place (fpeaking of
party fpirit) he fays, it may be
the creature of our form of go
vernment, but paradoxical as it
may appear, it is the creature
that will preferve its Creator.—
Aker that he immediately pro
ceeds to exhibit this creature of
our form of government, as he
terms it, m all the moff ludicrous
points of view. Is Ariftldes an
enemy to our form of govern
ment ? Some of his expreffions
would juflify the cenfuiv— <c to
fluff the ravenous maw of patri
otifm.” This may be confider
cd very fubl me and elegant by
Ariftides . If he is not a foe to
our form of government —why
does he burlefque the caule to
which he fays it owes its pre
fervation ? From fuch llrange
inconfiftency, I am conftrained
to impute his vindication of Mr.
Millcdge more to partiality or
force inferior confideration than
to principle. If not, where
ff“pt his tender fenfibiiity for
fmblic chamber, when the moft
indecent and infolent publica
tion that ever di{graced the fa
cred freedom of the prere
appeared againft the man who
has done more for the (late of
Georgia., than any other perfon
ever did, or perhaps ever will
do, and at rne inftant when, lie
was abfent from home render
ing his country t lie mo ft im
portant Ter vices—Services which
will be remembered with gra
titude by his fellow citizens,
and their poftericy, fo long as
that amiable virtue fhail find a
rcfkicnce in the human b. eaft.

amicable and honorable termina

On the fall day of the fcffidn,
Mr, Gnfwold attempted to fu

manfully oppofed by Mr, Mil

motion made by Mr. Grifwold,
which tended, by means hafty
and incon fide rate, to fruftratc
