V;Cowles^ieadScSeorgc ] ill ps Efquircs, which he c.cepted, and never afterwards t: >: piffled a v. ifh within my hear ing, for a return of rhe original —this was farely enough for rhe ro cone]Tide, that he was fttis licd. Put why fuch anxiety for ti.e or’giral paper? General Meriwether couKI have made as many more, as Mr. I {all could have figned, or willied ; for it is not to be fupj ofed, that an imagination f> prolific in inven- LJ i tion, had txh.mfted the la-l dreg . cf fabrication, in this dignified Jgecimen of I,ls talents . I can account for it only by fuppofing that he was convinced of the impropriety of his tor luff, and find : ng cor/ ary to his calcula tions, that he was dote fled, he v/idned to lay hold of the only evidence of his guilt, by which means .this pitiful aft might have been concealed from pub lic view. My former remarks relative to the proceedings of the 1 louie of Repreicntanves, of the tift of November, were cor reft; which may be feen bv a reference to the Journals of that day; and notwithftanding Mr. Hall lays, “ he is not able to make things that are not, an '4 pear as tho* they were,” lam of opinion that his capacity partakes very much of that talent, at leaft it has fhewn fo through the whole of this tranf aftion. In fpeaking cf a donation of five thoufand dollars to the Univerfity, Mr. Hall exhibits a wifh to pervert truth, and make imprefTions on the minds (jf the people by falfc ftatemerts. The fail is, there was no dona tion afked for, in favor of the Univerfity ; nor was it the in tention of the Houfe ro make one. An application was made by the Prefident for a loan, which was agreed to by the Houfe of Reprefentativcs, fent to the Se nate for concurrence, and through nr.ftake I prefume of their fecre t.ary, it was returned with a mef fage <c that the Senate had dif egreed with the Houfe in a do nation of five thoufand dollars to the Univerfity." Mr. Hall wii'hingto defeat the application for a loan, bv turning i: into t. J o ridicule, caught at it in that Jhape, and moved to agree with the Senate in rejecting the Pre jident’s requeft for a donation ; when in fafl there was no dona tion applied for, or intended by even a finglc member of the Legifljiture ; and altho’ there was at that time a full Motile, the members feeing his objedl, and viewing it as improper, would not vote, a few only ex cepted. Mr. Hall fays, <( as the pub lic are already fatisneJ with the truth of the certificate which he figned, there is no necefiky _O , 7 for his making oath to its vali dity. ” Here again is an eva fion, and nothing but a regard for his ears, and a dread of the pillory, prevents him from giv ing to the public this laft evi dence of the depravity of his intentions.
