The Prefident of the U nited States —the man who, to meet the approbatory fmiles of his countrymen, needs only an intelligent inveftigation of his conduct and meafures. 6. The 4th of March, 1801, a fecond era of American Inde pendence* —from a feene acted about that time, may our na tion be experimentally too wife fo confide again in men who would attempt to defeat her will, exprefled in unequivocal terms. 7. The Congrefs of 1801, the band of patriots who pruned of the hateful excrefcences which had grown out of what has been termed <( Federalifm.” 9. Sumter, Calhoun, Butler and Moore—for their fidelity they will receive the plaudits of their condiments. 10. Charles Pinckney, our envoy to the court of Madrid— Ins well-timed labors and pa triotic exertions in the fenate of the United States will not be forgotten. 11. The judiciary of the U nited States—while the judges are fupported in their true in dependence, may they never remain longer in office than the public good requires. 13. Day & H£ly, I have obferved in your pa per of Wednefday laft, a pub lication of Major Alexander Carfweißs, contradidling the ftatement I had given of the difpute that took place between him and myfelf cn the 6th ult. in Louifville, and to fubftantiate which, he produces the affida vits of two difmterefted perfons, as he calls them—Be it To ; but at the fame time it is neceftary to remark, that Mr. John Parfons, one of thofe difintereft cd perfons, declares that he was not prefent until the quarrel was nearly terminated, which circumftance, he lays, ought to have been fpecified in the affi davit. Mr. Carfweißs ftatement ihould not claim my attention, had he not added falfehood to cowardice •, he gees on to fay, that “ So far from Mr. Hadden's confidering that I had challeng ed him, that on the eight inft. Mr. William Barron, waited on me with a written challenge r • • from Mr. Hadden, in which he named Moore’s pond as the place of meeting, and requefted an anfwer on the day following, &c. to which I gave no anfwer, confidering Mr. Hadden not VrOithy notice, nor (heold I have dene it now, but to cohtradlft falsehoods.” The following certificate of Mr. William Barron, a man of at leaft as. much veracity as the Major, will ffiew what credit is due to the above aftVnion : I do hereby certify, that Major Alexander Carfweißs ftatement, fo far as rclpeils my carrying a written challenge from Cape. William Hadden, to him, is erroneous; the pur port of the note 1 handed Mr. Carfwell, being an acceptance of the verbal challenge given by him to Mr. Hadden, and ap pointing Moore’s Pond, which is within half a- mile of the Major’s houfe, and partly on his own land, as the place of meet ing. William Barron. As to Mr. Carfweißs not* confidering me worthy notice , I ffiaii pay little rcipeit to ; however, as he endeavors, to r* • i lereen his cowardice under amafk of honor, I jfhould be glad to know what conftitutes the gen tleman's confequence. Does it a rile f rom h i s be ing a B ri ti fn Tory during the American Revolu tion—in. arms, co-operating with the enemies of this coun try; and an uniform advocate of Eritifh meafures ?
