Hie of his veffi. We alio learn that about 900 blaciis, who held a garrifon in the ifland, were poilbned by a ftratagem of die French. [ Phil . Ga z . The following is puhlifhed in a northern pc per, as ta km from Dr Ru. h's Obferv.\ dons on the mode of Education proper in a Repuhl iC% A C nnftian cannot fail of being a Republican. The hif tory of the creation of Man and of the connexion of our fpecies to each other by birth, which is recorded in the Old Tefta nient, is the bed refutation that can be given to the divine right of Kings, and the ftrongell ar gument that can be tiled in fa vour of the the original and na tural equality of all Mankind. A Chriftain I fay again, cannot fa I of being a republican, for every precept of the Gofpel in culcates thole degrees of humi lity, felt denial, and brotherly kindnefs, which are directly op pofed to the pride of Monar chy, and the pageanty of a Court. A Chrillian cannot fail of being ufeful to the repub lic i for his religion teacheth him that no man “ liveth to himfelf” And laftly, a Chrillian cannot fail of being wholly inoffenfive ■, for his religion teacheth him to do to others what he would wilh in like manner.’* From the Balance. As many people, of friendly be nevolent difpofttions, as well as J'ome others, of an oppofte caft, plunge themfelves into poverty and wretchednefs by a tbought lejs profufion, or through a want of prudent economy, the following excellent maxims of economy , ex*rafted from the ingenious and valuable writings cf rev. Dr. Latbrop, are re - to general perufal. They may he particularly ufe ful to young men and women, who are juft Jetting out in the world. “ Spend not your money be fore you earn it i nor promife it before you are fure of it. Promifes, made on other men’s credit, or on mere contingencies are liable to fad. If you dil appoint your neighbour often, you lofe your credit and his confidence, and perhaps pro voke a(uir, whichbreaks friend fhip, dill orbs your peace, and augments your ex pence. * f Ellimate your probable incomes, making fome allow ance for difappomtments ; and j let your cxpences fJi fo much fhorr, that fomething may be left at the year’s end. He that daily con fumes the fruits of his daily labour, is unprepared for the day of misfortune. Mod men, if they v/ill live within the bounds of nature, may, by mo- | derate induftry, provide for themfelves and families. It is always reputable to live mode rately, when we have not the means of living fpendidly. The example of others is not the Handardby which wc arem judge of extravagance j but our own circumftances and abilities. 1 hat may be extravagance in one, which would be pardmony in another. I “ F.nter not Into ton cl.de connexions with thole of fhpe ribr fortunes, if they are difpof ed to live tafter, than von follow. Never make a vain oflentadon of wealth, winch you don’t pof kfs ; nor live at * other men’s expence when you can live at your own. Wade not, in in dulgence, that time, which you owe to die duties of life, the culture of your mind and educa tion of your family. Confunie not in luxury, that money which you owe to your creditor, or to the public, or by which you might relieve your family from diftrefs. When you lee ano ther grow rich, or item to grow rich, in any calling, conclude not that you could do the fame, nor quit your own profcfllon, lor one which you do not im derdaud, and have not the means of purfuing. Many have fallen by reaching at things too high for them. Lay out for yourfelf bufmefs, to fill up your time, but not more than you can manage well. Be not in too great hade to be lich. The moderate profits of your own proper buiinefs are the lured ; and the honed gains of indudrv and frugality, are the mod fweet, reputable and durable.” WILL BE SOLD, At the Market Hcufe, in the Town of Louifville, on SA TURDAY, the 1 2th day cf February next , between the hours of ten and two o'clock, 668 Acres of LAND, in four different traXs or furveys, within one mile of Louifville, being the real edate of John Paiions, deceafed.
