I T is alwavs rhe intend of
a far grater part of the nation to
have a thing r ghr, than to have
it wrong j and, therefore, in
a country whole government is
founded on the fyftcm of elec
tion and rep re len tan on, the fate
of every party is decided by
its principles.
As this fyftem is the only
foim and principle of govern
ment by which liberty can be
prtlerved, and the only one
that can embrafe all the varie
ties of a great extent of conn-,
try, it ne. efllirily .follows, that
t< have, the rep re fen tat ion real,
the eledion mult be real *. and
that whe.c the elc&ipn is a fic
tion, the reprefemation is a
fiction alfo. Like will always
produce its like.
A great deal has been faid
and written concerning the con
duct of Mr. Burr during the late
conteft in the federal legiflature,
whether Mr. Jcfferfoa or Mr.
Burr fhould be declared prt fi
dentbf the United States. Mr.
Burr has been accufecl of in
triguing to obtain (he prefiden
cy. Whether this charge be
fubftantiated or not makes little
or no part of the purport of this •
letter. There is a point of much
higher importance to attend to
than any thing that relates to
the individual N!r. Burr; for
the great point is not whether
Mr. Burr has intrigued, but
whether the legiflaturc has in
trigued w ith him ?
