The companies entered for this
premium wore the Floyd Rifles Ma
con Gui 'dii, Albany Guards and
Thonrasviile Guards, all of which

The Mi'chell House, that magnificent
hotel, was all aglow with life and
brilliancy. As the hour o” nine ap
proached, the gallant chivalry and
lovely beauty of the Empire Stale
and the Land of Flowers filled its
pallors, corridors and bails, and soon
thereafter were engaged in the be
wildering mazes of the: waltz, or the
fascinations of ilie graceful square
dancen, or promenading the haod
sorae verandas, or enjoying a tete-a
tete in son-..- be . itching retreat. Thus
passed tbe time, the pleasure una
bated, until 3 o’clock, when (hr msvry
crowd dispersed.
Saturday was a. favorable day—the
clouds of the preceding bid entirely
disappeared, and the crowd was the
largest over on the gvom. i on
closing day. Tbo contest- for the
most stylish saddle horse, buggy
horse, heat pair of mules, tbo trials of
speed, the races, the toareament, "
combined to make it attractive. Dr.
Tucker delivered the Grange premi
ums from the judges’ stand. Quite
a happy effort.

Fair. Gov. Colquitt did not attend
on account of sickness. The Savan
nah Guards Band furnished music.
A telephone was in active operation
in the main building—created quite a
sensation. Mr. Cox, “Knight of Eve
ning Gale,” was the successful rider,
with Branch, of Camilla, second. W.
E. Barnes, our enterprising jeweller,
added greatly to tho attractions of
the Fair. Jim Young, the popular
young man of Quitman, cheated no
little sensation at tho ball. Tlie
.handsomest lady at tho ball was from j
Savannah. Brass buttons and gold
lace wore all tlie go on Thursday.
T. N. Arrington had 17 horses on
.•lUbitioß, each ono of which deserved
a premium. The Fair was financially
a success—would have been so other
wise, considered, had the Quitman
Grange received their desorts.
Griflin Golding was awarded a
premium for the best three year old
stallion. Mrs. Golding, a lady 70
years old, received several premiums
for articles of hor own manufacture.

The following assessment cf Taxes for
Brooks county, Ga., for county purposes,
j for tho year 1877, was ihado and entered on
i the Minutes of the County Court August G,
1877:
Ist. To build or repair Court Houses or
jails, bridges or fences, or other publio inn
provemeuts, according to tho contract, 5 per’
cent, ou State Tax.
2nd. To pay sheriffs, jailors, or other of
ficers’ fees that they be legally entitled to
out Of tho county, 5 per cent.
3rd. To pay the legal indebtedness of the
county due or to become due during tho
year, or past due, 20 per cent.
4th. To pay jurors, where by tlio local'
li-Avs they are allowed a per diem compensa
tion, 15 per cent.
