j from the Charieston Courier.
On the loss of Miss Maria Os
borne ,on the 22 d AvU. 1 806 >
in the Schooner Little Patty,
Iwvrtd from Charleston to St.
Marys.
UPRIGHT was the morn, and
gendv blew the gale.
The sailor rheerly loos’d the
swelling sail,
‘'Ehe yiddv bark soon caught the
fiatt’ring bret ze,
-And skimniM. with swiftness, o’-
er the trembling seas.
The land drew near, the destin’d
port appear’d,
Ard Hope, \v ; th wanton smile,
each bosom cheei’d.
Then Boreas howl’d and dread
/'rlanttc roar’d,
And, foaming, dash’d, his angry
biilows ’hoard.
Before ti e gale the helpless ves
sel flies,
New lost to view, now lifted to
the skiei.
Contending winds ?nd waves now
sweep the ch 1 k
And in a moment leaves the bark
a wreck.
Vain was each art, the sinking
wreck to save,
(Alas what strength can equal
ocean’s wave l)
Till worn with toil, the sad des
paring crew
Now leave this danger so encoun
ler new ,
“While pale far’d famine aim’d
with death’s command,
Assail’d, with tenors, ere they
reach’d the land.
But ah ! my Muse, must thou,
with sighs relate,
Must ihou, in tears, deplore Ma
ria’s fate ?
Just then, when fate and borrow
stay’d the while,
“When Hope benignant shtd her
partin g smile ;
I.’tn then, a surge more ruthless
than the rest
Embrac’d her, bore her, on its
chilly breast.
Ah ! then herelt of cvVy friendly
aid,
With what devotion sigh’d the
guiltless maitl !
She clasp’d hands, to Heaven
she cast Her eye ;
But FUaven, all-wis,., had doom’d
the maid to die I
Her ready fate then dipt the silk
en thread,
Attending Engels caught her soul
and tied.
I low oft„ sweet girl, when fancy
led the way,
Didst thou with rapture wait the
happy da\,
Whm thou should hold them to
thy faithful heart,
Thy mother, brothers, never
more to part ;
Thy mother, who a prey to hopes
and fears
lias steep’d her pillow in afflict
ion’s tears.
Ah ! with what fondness has she
wish’d to find
Improvement glowing in thy
} outhful mind ;
With vs hat delight would she have
tought to trace
The lines which absence might
have gi\ ’n thy face,
And when new love had heav’d
htr aged breast,
Still with redoubl’d kindness thee
caress’d.
Ah ! y es, full well she knew thou and
soidy smooth
Life’s rugged path, and all her
sorrows soothe—
She knew, when sinking with the
load of years,
Thou’d calm her woes by mild
affection’s tears.
But, ah ! the wcrlu’s an endless
scene of w&ca,
A waste, a desert, now, where
ev’r she goes 1
Her grief, airs ! must court the
li iendty urn,
And rush, with joy, to its eter
nal bout 11 .
Calm’d be each wave, each gentle
zephyr cease.
While her fair him descends to
realms cl peace—
Ye Neriad-s, Thetis, daughters of
of the Waves,
Receive her, take her, to your co
ral caves ;
Oh ! Ocean, on thy trembling
bosom bear
Her tender form*—Oh, let it be
thy care !
H O P E,
Or expectation of Things to come.
H O PE, we by experience
know to be a gentle and Iv.eet
eftiifion, or expansion ol the
(oul towards home good ex’
pc£led to come ; so that when
we are full of hope, we feel a
certain inflation, both within
and without, in our whole bo
dy, together with a glowing
hut plea fan t heat, from the
blood and spirits universally
diffuefed. It is called the man
na from Heaven. When all
other things fail us, Hope will
Hand by us to the last. Hope
gives freedom to the captive
rhainedtothe oar; health to
the sick, while death grins in
his face ; victory to tfie defeat
ed ; and wealth to the beggar
while he is craving alms :
Leading ihem still insensibly
along,
By the strange witchcraft of
anuori. Cowl
When Alexander the Great
invaded Peifia, he gave his
patrimonial efiate to his
friends; and having legally
palled away the whole, Perdic
cas laid, “ And what O King
do you reserve for yourfelf?”
44 My Hopes, ” (said Alexan
der) “Why, then, of those
Hopes only will we that are
your followers be (haters ; ”
and for that reason refilled
what the King had freely given
him, and his example was fol
lowed byfeveral others.
A Rhodan, taking too
much freedom in reprehend
ing the vices of a tyrant, he
was Unit up in a cage; his
har.cjs were cut off, his noffrils
flit, ar.d his face disfigured by
many rude gashes cut in it;
whereupon a friend advised
him to put an end to his mile
rics, by lamilhing himfeit to
death ; but he, with great in
dignation, rejected the propo
sal, saying “ While a man has
breathall things are to be hop
ed for ; and he would not ioie
the p.leafure of hoping to rid
himielf of his present afflifclion.
But Hope ill grounded docs
often trick ami bubble the
owner, as it did to a Spanifli
Woman, who went a begging
to a French flioemcker, with
three of her little children, who
said to her 44 Good woman, I
will ease thee or {bine pall of
thy charge; for if thou leave
one of thy lens with me, I will
breed hint up in my trade, and
ru ahe him capable of living
like a man, and to be helpful
to his patents also. ” Cod for
bid, said the woman, that I
should call away my child to a
{hanger, and bung him up to
lo pitiful a mechanic tiade as a
