To Messrs. JAA and KING.
Gentlemen,
Nothing could be more agreeable to
a real friend to the French nation, or
to its representative, citizen Genet,
than your truly ’iame publication in this
-•Evening Daily Advertiser. Ii you
really with a good government to his
country, which may in your opinion
mean a monarchy, as well as any thing
else, and if you did not intend to injure
that gentleman and the French cause,
with the American people, why did
you not at firft, as well as now, certify
all the circumstances relative to this
truly ridiculous bufmefr,: —you are bot h
lawyers, and know, that hearsay evi
dence, even at firft hand, is never ad
mitted on the rnoll trifling occation ;
had you to’d the truth at once, i l is
probable citizen Genet would have
continued to treat you with blent con
tempt, and you might have been (pared
the pain (if pain it is), of pocketing
the lie dire ft; your certificate would
then have run thus :
We do certify that mr. per cl ary
Hamilton and mr. Jecretary Knox told

(viz. mr. ‘jecretary Hamilton and mr.

told him (viz. mr. fecr-etary Jefferfon),
that mr. fecv.tary Dallas had told him
that mr. Genet had in an angry and in
temperate mode told him (to wit, mr. je
er clary Dallas, and not the president),
that, “ he would appeal from the pre-j
fident to the people.” —Look at yourj
own certificate, compare it with this
and blufti.—You (hall hear again from
