I am afloni hcd that so many of
this description of men are select

they are men the lead acquainted
with b’usinefs, of all others in the
world, and of course, the least qua

They generally polsefs the gift vs
the gab , and they take up a great
deal of uncecehary lime, in trying
to .display this only gift, which
many of them only possess ‘1 wen.

the business would be better done,

So that ne saving of the United

with wSiich I shall conclude this

should he not agree to give him
tight dollars) provided he should
commence at high twelve, and
..quit at three, would he pay him
for more than a quarter of a dav’s
work ?

biR —In compliance with my
promise of yesterday. I herewith
give you the information you e'e
sire relative to lands lying in Illi
nois, belonging to non residents.
The military bouoty lands in the
bancs of the patentee, are by act
of Congress exempt from taxation
for three years from the date of
the notice; but that exemption
o’oes not extend to the purchaffr.
lliofe lands as well as all others
in the state, are, for the purpose of
taxation, divided into Ist. 2nd. &
3 I.rate. The first class is subject
to an annual tax of 3 dollars and
20 cent3 the quarter section.—
7 he second ciass, 2 dollars and 40
cents, and the third class to l dol
ar and 60 cents. Where the title
is acquired, previous to the Ist day
of August in any year, a tax is
payable fer that year. The pro
prietor. must lill his l->nd on or be
fore that day, with the Auditor of
public accounts, giving under oath
a statement both of the quantity k
quality and the tax according
to fueh list is required to be paid
on or before the first day of the
succeeding October. A failure to
make the proper entry for taxation,
or to pay the tax agreeably to law,
subjects the*Jands to a tuple tax.
If the lands have been entered k
the failure is confined to the pay
mer.t, the forfeiture is then regu
lated by the delcription given by
the piopr.-ctor ; bu s if there be no
entry made, except that which the
Auditor is required by law to make
from information, the rule of the
office is to enter it in aii Inch cases
as firft rate.
1 the lands are then fold to raise
the tax, the proprietor is allowed
two years from the day of tale to
redeem. The redemption is the
amount paid together with 100
pc-ir cent and the cast of a sale,
which must be paid to the Auditor
•of Public Accounts, for the use
cf the purchaser. Dtfeds convey
ing tides must be recorded in the
county within which the land lies,
within one year from the date
thereof.
I have the honor to be, very re

MONT BLANC.
It will be remembered that an
account lome time since appeared,
of a M. Hamel, a Russian Coun
cilor of State, having attempted
to afeend to the iummit ot Mont
Blanc, and that in this attempt
three ot his guides perished. M.
Hamel was accompanied in this
dangerous enterprite by two bn
ghfh gentlemen, Mdsrs. Dorn
ford and Henderfcn, members of
me University ot Oxford, & fome
other parlous. Me alio took with
him leveral guides. Ihe party
commenced tneir toilsome expedi
tion on the iSih ot August, at a
quarter past 5 o’clock in the rnorn
mg, and continued, with incredi
ble tabor and danger, and amidst
continued iuow and rJn, to as

on the 20th, at had past 8 o’clock,
on the iaft grand piattonn, within
sight of the object of their desires
ine guides congratulated the tra
vellers on having surmounted the
molt serious difficulties, and alsur
ed them that never before had the
afeent been more luccefstully a
chieved M Hamel’s puife at this
time beat 128 pu.faaons in a min
ule, but the party were in good
hea'th. They breaktafled on the
platform, and Mr. Hamel prepared
two billets, which he meant to at
tach to two carrier pigeons, at the
moment of his reaching the sum
mit, to apprise his friends at Cha
mo*ni of his success. “ Would
you now take a thousand pounds
sterling to go back ?” laid one of
theienglifh gem I e men tohis friend.
** I would not return for any
price,” was the anfwcr. The par
ty now advanced, when all at once
the snow on which they were tread
ing gave way, and overwhelmed
l f le m altogether. By £rcat exer
tions the party succeeded in rais
ing their heads above the fnaw,
and afsilied each other to escape,
but five cf the guides had difap
peared. Os these two were soon
discovered, and fzved, but three
had funn. never to rife again. With
great peifor.al risk Mdsrs. Dorn

GENERAL BAUER. • j
In 1712, when the Aufsian ar- I

his oiigin, even his native country
was ahnoft a secret; he was en
camped near Ilusum. One day
he invited to dinner all his brother
officers, and fome other s persons
ot dillincticn ; when the party
were afsembied, he font for a mil

a commanding officer alarmed the
worthy couple; but Bauer die

them vvim jftfidence ; he wish

wanted fome kiformatbn respect

foe 1 elated to his Excellency, ‘-that
.he mill had belonged to his fa

eldest fbn ; two b'O hers were
trade; men, a sifter was married to
one ot the fame busineis, and God
had blessed hi with a family of
four children ” “So you wtre
three brothers,” Laid the General;
“there were four of us,” answer
ed the miller (who did not wish
perhaps to rank a famous soldier
with millers, ) “the fourth enlist
ed as a fbi ier, but we have never
heard of him, he muff have been
killed.”
It is easy to conceive the effect
this conversation produced on the
other gutfts, fiut Bauer would nor
notice their astonishment till he
could raise it fell higher , “Gen
tlemen,” be exclaimed, “you
were always anxious to know my
origin; i was born here, and you
have heard thekiftoryof my fa mi
ly j” he then embraced the miller,
and his u i'e, as their long loit bro
tber. Ihe next day he regaled
them all in the mill, where he was
born, and made valuable presents
to his relations, and sent the mill
er’s only son to Berlin, who after
wards had the honor ot propagat
ing the name of Bauer.
On Thursday, Mss Minty Gra
ham was tried at Baltimore, on an
indictment, as a coma on lcoid.
Alter a tedious examination of nu
merous vviinefics, and a zealous
prosecution and elaborate defence,
by abie counftl, the jury retired,
and soon returned with a verdict of
not guilty. It fatiafactori'y appear
ed, in evidence, that she was an
