C^Tho returns wc have received of the laic
election are hardly sufficient as yet to enable us to
state positively xU.ut w ill be the character of the
next Legislature and tif our next ^Delegation in
Congress; though it is suSeiont to nlloxv us to
hazard a guess of the same. Aud, judgiitg from
xx hat xve have seed, and the complexion of the
counties yet to be heard i’roln. xxc arc fully of opi
nion, that there will he a majority of Futon men
or Anti Riillifiers in botli branches „f the Legisla
ture. As reSptcls the old party landmarks, xx hicli
have been nearly obliterated, xvc shall not be sur
prised to-find a majority of Clark men in the As
sembly ; and three or four Clark men in Congress.
Awful Catastrophe.'—Early on Wednesday
morning last, in a reucoutro with Henry Byrom,
Mr; Thomas M. Ellis, loug known as ono of the
isiost industrious and enterprising men in Macon,
received a pistol ball in his abdomen, Of xxhich
he died in about three hours. This afflicting 1 oc
currence has thrown a gloom over the xvhole
toxvn. Mr. Ellis xvas greatly respected for. bis-
ihoral virtues, his Uprightness of coudnct, his en
terprising genius, and his untiring industry* One
of the Erst settlers of Macdn, the tow it owes much
*o him for its rapid rrowth and unprecedented
prosperity. W hat Girard did for Philadelphia,
Mr. Ellis was doing for Macon.' 'lib pried inio e-
very avenue of business; hesemtruized every de
partment" of-industry; aud in every one xvas his
influence felt.
Gf-liis unfortunate connexion- xvith the' Macon
Bank, (xvhieh- xvas believed to be the occasion of
the rencontre,) though xve have fOf JUrselves full
faith in the innocence r.nd integrity of Mr. Eliis,
xve are not prepared to satisfy the public. Wo
know that he xvas preparing -a full developemcut
of his relation with that J.istitdtion; and xVe have
no doubt, had he lived, that his innocence would
have been fully established. . ? •:
Mr. E. xvas a native, of Philadelphia, and xvas
about 3-1 yea, rK olHe was u respected member
of the Baptist Church; a Vico President of"the
Georgia Agricultural Society; and a member of
several other religious and charitable associations.
JUha s left a bereaved widow, txvo helpless or

mourn his untimely exit. *

Church of Christ at the dtc! ley grove, Monroe.
County, Ga., August 28. 1832.
P EAR IMLTHERN:—VYe have learned with
pain atid regret through veriotis channels and
lrom divers sources, that reports arc in circulation,
and have been repeated and rciteratedtigaiiiar.d again
through every part of this State, and as in: as our be-
lox’en brother, and pastor of this church, ti.e Rev.
William Hesdeksun, deceased, was known, that !u-
in his last illness, and upon his death hed, renounced
as an heresy the doctrine he had maintained «ilh s,*
much veal and ardour through the whole course oi
his public ministry, viz: the doctrine cu Particular.
Unconditional and Eternal Election, and (he 1 iual
Perseverance of the Saints through Grace: and that
he died in dispair, and without the hope ol the glory
of God.
‘ We have no knowledge of the source from when re
these reports originated; conjecture alone is left in
search of that heart so depraved, of that breast so de
void of Christian charity, so lost, to every Christian
virtue, cs to dare breathe the poisonous blast ol slen
der against the consecrated chambers of the dead.
We deem it therefore our imperious duty to address
you through the medium of the press, that your minds
may' be disabused of so gross an error, that the cause
ot Christ be not xvounded, that your faith be not sha
ken, and that the slander* r do not for a moment tri-
I utnph over the spoils of an ill gotten victor;-. We
! have added to this address, in tho form of certificate',
I a small part of the abundant testimony that could bo
' produced, but which must be sufficient to satisfy your
minds, looefirm your hopes, and to strengthen your
faith in the doctrines of the Gospel of Chivt; and
may the grace of God encircle you and sustain you
through life, and may you he enabled in the hour i f
death to testify to all around that you have confi
dence in the Lord, and that you rest on Him whose
arm. alone hath brought .-.-Ration; and that jou may *
die in the triumphs of faith and in the full assurance
of fi blissful immortality beyond the grave as did our
beloved brother and pastor the late Rev. William
Henderson.
